Phish kicked off their last two-night fall tour run last night, playing at the Verizon Theatre in Grand Prairie, TX. The two-show stand, which comes just days before the band return to Las Vegas for a four-night Halloween run, featured several tour debuts and the typical second-set jamming highlights.

The group opened up the show with a couple tracks from their new album, _Big Boat, in the funky “No Men In No Man’s Land” and the light “Breath and Burning.” “Poor Heart” preceded the first-set energetic staple “Wolfman’s Brother.” After “Water in the Sky” and a cover of Clifton Chenier’s “My Soul,” a run of tour debuts came in the form of “NICU” and an “It’s Ice” that segued into the euphoric “Ocelot.” The crowd-favorite rarity “Fuck Your Face,” which Trey Anastasio dubbed the second best Phish tune, was followed by what he continues to call the best the band can offer, the Jon Fishman-led “Ass Handed.” The drummer then led the way into “Saw It Again” before Anastasio calmed things down with his ballad “Running Out of Time” and the band rounded out the diverse first set with “David Bowie.”

Set number two kicked off with the biggest bust out of the night in “Dog Faced Boy,” the first iteration of the tune since August 11, 2015, a span of 50 shows. A solid “Seven Below” preceded the Big Boat spectacle “Petrichor,” the first second-set appearance of the new, expansive tune thus far. An energetic “Maze” led straight into the mid-set calm of “Dirt” before the jamming highlights of the night came in the run of “I Always Wanted It This Way,” which featured extended keyboard work from Page McConnell and found Anastasio back at the marimba lumina, and “Piper,” which included a tease of the Deep Purple rocker “Woman from Tokyo.” After a “Bug” closed out the set, the band returned to the stage for a rare appearance of “Buffalo Bill” that segued into their cover of Velvet Underground’s “Rock and Roll.”

Phish will round out their Texas run in Grand Prairie tonight before heading to Las Vegas this weekend.
