Over the weekend, George Porter Jr., founding bassist of New Orleans funk godfathers The Meters, was honored by Bass Player Magazine with their Lifetime Achievement Award and played two nights of music to mark the occasion.

On Friday night at The Min in Los Angeles, Porter was joined by Jane’s Addiction drummer Stephen Perkins, bassist Tal Wilkenfeld and Laith Al-Saadi. Wilkenfeld and Porter dueled basses on The Meters’ “Africa,” Perkins helped out on “Lovelight,” “Hey Pocky A-Way” and “Circles” and The Voice finalist Al-Saadi lent his vocals to “Sneaking Sally Through the Alley.”

Saturday brought the ceremony itself, as Porter was presented with the Lifetime Achievement honor by Randy Jackson, and Porter again played with Wilkenfeld on The Meters’ “People Say,” while bassist Jerry Jemmott joined Porter for “Cissy Strut.”
