Last night at Jam the Vote, Nicole Atkins and Preservation Hall Jazz Band teamed up for an alternate version of the tune “When I Get Low I Get High,” popularized by Ella Fitzgerald.

Atkins, who spoke with Jambands.com about the song, says that she co-wrote the song with her husband Ryan McHugh on the way to the venue that evening after Ben Jaffe of Preservation Hall Jazz Band suggested Atkins lead the band on the Fitzgerald tune but with alternate lyrics.

The result is “When They Go Low, We Go High,” an election-themed song that references many of the numerous scandals that have occurred during a stressful election year.

“We were throwing out lines because it was too much,” Atkins says of the bevy of material to choose from, including Hillary Clinton’s email scandal and many of Donald Trump’s antics throughout the process.

As for the night as a whole, Atkins called it “one of the best nights of my life.” She added, “Everybody was so positive. It was great to see music changing people’s mood.”
