Jackie Greene held his special birthday celebration at The Warfield in San Francisco last night with a host of special guests throughout including a Grateful Dead set that saw both Phil Lesh and Bob Weir share the stage for just the third time since Fare Thee Well.

The show opened with Jason Crosby sitting in on the opening tunes including “Now I Can See for Miles” and “Silver Lining” before Mark Karan joined the fold for Traffic’s “Medicated Goo” and Little Milton’s “That’s What Love Will Make You Do” as well as the Allman Brothers’ “Hot ‘Lanta” before the set-closing “Till the Light Comes.”

Before the Grateful Dead set, Greene welcomed Weir for a brief acoustic set that included a few tunes from the guitarist’s latest Blue Mountain including “Gonesville” and “Lay My Lily Down.” The five-song set wrapped up with “Gone Wanderin’,” “Light Up Your Window” and the Dead’s “Ripple.”

Weir rejoined to kick off the third set, dedicated to the Grateful Dead, with opening takes on “Jack Straw” and the Temptations’ “Standing on Shaky Ground.”

It was then that Lesh came out with Weir along with Nicki Bluhm and Alex Nelson for “Scarlet Begonias” and “Fire on the Mountain.” Weir and Lesh then teamed up on a segment that included “Dark Star” and “I’m So Gone” before Lesh led the way on “Shakedown Street.”

The “Shakedown” led into Floyd’s “Another Brick in the Wall” as Weir and Mark Karan joined once again, leading the band into “China Cat Sunflower” and “I Know You Rider” with Nicki Bluhm adding vocals to the finale as well as Ross James.

To start the encore, the guests came out again to sing Happy Birthday to Greene, present him with a cake and then close down the show with “Sugaree” as Lesh, Weir, Bluhm, Karan, Ross James, Jason Crosby, Bruce Spencer and Alex Nelson all contributed to the jam.
