Joe Russo’s Almost Dead’s New Year’s run kicked off with a return to the venue where they played their first show, Brooklyn Bowl in New York. With two shows ahead at the Capitol Theatre, the band delivered some old Grateful Dead favorites and other selections during their opener.

Among the highlights, the first electric version of “On the Road Again” early on in the first set that ended with a bustout of sorts as the band opted for a cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “Atlantic City,” not played since October of 2015 at the same venue.

The lengthy second set was highlighted by an opening combo of “Lost Sailor” and “Saint of Circumstance” as well as a brief “Let It Grow” jam out of “Morning Dew” that saw Marco Benevento tip his cap to the late George Michael by teasing his “Careless Whisper” during the improv section. Benevento and Russo also nodded to their recent Duo reunion with a jam during “Tennessee Jed.”

Almost Dead will hit the stage at the Capitol Theatre tonight.
