Umphrey’s McGee kicked off their first New Year’s run in Chicago since 2010 last night at the Rivera Theatre with a show that included a brief acoustic section in the first set featuring an appropriate bustout.

Guitarists Brendan Bayliss and Jake Cinninger picked up acoustic guitars for the UM rarity “Memories of Home” in the first set, not played since September 1, 2008, or 897 shows. The tune has only been played four times by Umphrey’s dating back to 2006. Bayliss and Cinninger recently played the tune at their annual holiday show in 2014.

Other highlights from the show include an early segment of “Nothing Too Fancy” and the oldie “Kimble” as well as a cohesive second set that saw heavy hitters like “Wappy Sprayberry,” “Bridgeless” and “Ringo” complemented by newcomers from the Raw Stewage quarter like “Remind Me” and “Upward.” The lone cover on the night came in the form of ZZ Top’s “Cheap Sunglasses” led by Cinninger.

Umphrey’s will return to the stage tonight, this time across the street at the Aragon Ballroom.
