Gov’t Mule’s Beacon Theatre run got started last night with the customary slew of special guests joining the band throughout the night on inventive covers and originals.

Before the guests arrived however Mule focused on some of the covers they recorded this year including the opening track “Just Got Paid” my ZZ Top as well as The Beatles’ “And Your Bird Can Sing,” which they did for Howard Stern’s celebration of the band’s Revolver record.

The cohesive first set also included a nod to Prince with “When Doves Cry” in and out of “Beautifully Broken” that also included Nirvana’s “Come As You Are” and “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” teases.

The guests would arrive in the second set after Mule opened with a series of tunes before emerging Southern blues rocker Marcus King emerged for Marshall Tucker Band’s “Can’t You See” along with former Wings drummer Steve Holley and Paul Ill on bass, both replacing Matt Abts and Jorgen Carlsson. King hung around for the following take on Jeff Beck’s “Freeway Jam” before Jimmy Vivino, a mainstay at Mule Beacon runs, joined the band on guitar for a “The Other One” jam and Deep Purple’s anthem “Hush,” which also saw drummer Carmine Appice join in on drums.

Watch that performance below. Mule returns to the Beacon tonight for their New Year’s Eve celebration.
