The unexpected death of founding Allman Brothers Band drummer Butch Trucks came as a surprise to the music world yesterday, and today, a police report from Trucks’ town of residence, West Palm Beach, FL, says that the musician’s cause of death was suicide from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Miami Herald reports. Trucks was 69 years old.

There has been no official release regarding the cause of death, but the Herald reports that the police have made available a transcript of a frantic 911 call made around 6pm on Tuesday evening, reportedly from Trucks’ wife Melinda from their Palm Beach condo, about her husband turning a gun on himself.

Trucks was reportedly still alive when the authorities arrived, but the drummer was soon reported deceased by a dispatcher. Conclusions from the autopsy by the Palm Beach County Medical Examiner’s office will not be available for some time.

Since the news of Trucks’ passing emerged, tributes have come in from all over the music world, including statements from Trey Anastasio, Gregg Allman, Warren Haynes, Dave Schools and more, plus musical homages last night from the likes of Bob Weir, Tedeschi Trucks, Greensky Bluegrass and more.
