In a recent interview with The New Zealand Herald, Carlos Santana offered his two cents on Adele’s Album of the Year win over Beyonce’s Lemonade, applauding Adele’s ability but making a comparison to Beyonce.

“I think that Adele won because she can sing-sing,” he said. “With all respect to our sister Beyonce, Beyonce is very beautiful to look at and it’s more like modeling kind of music—music to model a dress—she’s not a singer-singer, with all respect to her.”

As these comments made their way to Beyonce’s rabid fan base, Santana clarified his comments on Facebook, saying they were simply taken out of context. “My intent was to congratulate Adele on her amazing night at the Grammys,” he wrote. “My comment about Beyonce was regretfully taken out of context. I have the utmost respect for her as an artist and a person. She deserves all the accolades that come her way.”

It’s worth noting that Santana and Beyonce actually performed together at the Super Bowl in 2003 as a part of the pregame show at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, CA.
