John Mayer continued his tour in support of new solo album The Search For Everything last night, stopping by New York’s famed Madison Square Garden with a multi-part show that featured the first instance of a Grateful Dead cover by the Dead & Company guitarist in his current format.
The show kicked off with the first of two full-band sets, which featured Mayer hits like “Slow Dancing in a Burning Room” and “Waiting on the World to Change,” plus a cover of Bob Marley’s “War.” Mayer then played a shorter acoustic set that included a cover of Tom Petty’s “Free Fallin’,” then a three-song set with his John Mayer Trio featuring his own “Vultures” and covers of blues staple “Crossroads” and Jimi Hendrix’s “Bold as Love.”
For the second full-band set, Mayer displayed the lessons learned from his Grateful Dead band mates, bringing out “Fire On the Mountain” for the first time and extending the tune with guitar improvisation. Watch a video of that performance below. The set also included Search For Everything single “Still Feel Like Your Man” and “Why Georgia.” The show then rounded out with two encores, ending with a solo Mayer performance of “You’re Gonna Live Forever in Me.”
See the full setlist below. Mayer’s tour continues tonight at the Verizon Center in Washington, DC.
