Vernon and Hornsby have connected numerous times over the years, including on the Dessners’ Day of the Dead tribute album as the two recorded “Black Muddy River” for the compilation honoring the music of the Grateful Dead. Vernon also contributed to Hornsby’s record, collaborating on the track “Over the Rise.”

Lewis, who also contributed to the Day of the Dead compilation with “Sugaree,” shared the stage with Vernon and Hornsby at Eaux Claires Music Festival in 2016 as the very first Day of the Dead performance took place with The National and many others.
