Jonathan Demme, the Academy Award-winning director for iconic films such as The Silence of the Lambs, passed away this morning at the age of 73. Demme reportedly passed away due to esophageal cancer and complications from heart disease.

Along with classic films like Lambs as well as Philadelphia, The Manchurian Candidate and others, Demme also served as director for a number of musical films including the Talking Heads’ iconic Stop Making Sense. Over the years, Demme also worked with the likes of UB40, Chrissie Hynde, New Order, The Pretenders, Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young, Kenny Chesney and Justin Timberlake.

Most recently, Demme worked with Timberlake on his 2016 documentary. He is survived by his wife and three children.
