Joe Russo’s Almost Dead headlined the 1st Bank Center in Broomfield, CO over the weekend with special guests Medeski, Martin and Wood as the band was originally supposed to play Red Rocks, only for weather to force them inside.

The band opened with an appropriate cover of Bob Dylan’s “Shelter From the Storm” as Tom Hamilton led the band on their first ever rendition of the song. Another debut came later on in the first set as Almost Dead dipped into Bob Weir’s recent solo record Blue Mountain, with a debut of “Gonesville” led by Scott Metzger.

The second set began with a guest-heavy jam as Adam Morford, Billy Martin and John Medeski joined Joe Russo on drums and percussion for a “Drums” and “Space” segment. Almost Dead bandmates Marco Benevento, Dave Dreiwitz, Hamilton and Metzger eventually joined in to bring the “Space” jam full circle.

Medeski hung around for the following “Dark Star” before Almost Dead closed out the set on their own, including sweeping takes on the “Terrapin Suite” as well as “The Other One” and “Eyes of the World.” A lengthy double-encore was highlighted by “One More Saturday Night” and “Not Fade Away” as well as the delicate “Ripple” and Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run.”

Antibalas/Superhuman Happiness saxophonist Stuart Bogie also augmented the group throughout most of the night. Bogie, who has toured as a member of Arcade Fire, joined Almost Dead on Friday at Denver’s The Ogden Theatre. Friday evening’s set included a first-time cover of MMW’s “Bubblehouse,” which served as nod to the Saturday’s opening act.
