Grandaddy bassist Kevin Garcia passed away yesterday due to complications from a massive stroke suffered on Monday, the band announced on Facebook. Garcia was 41.

“There are no accurate words to express what we need to,” the band wrote on Facebook. “We were all able to say goodbye to him and he was surrounded by his closest friends and family here in Modesto.”

Garcia started playing with Grandaddy when he was 15 years old, founding the group before their 1997 debut album Under the Western Freeway. The band recently returned from a decade-long hiatus for a new album Last Place, released in March.

A GoFundMe has been started in Garcia’s name. He is survived by his two children, Jayden and Gavin, grandmother Joan, parents Randy and Barbara, brothers Craig and Jeff and wife Sondra.
