Zen Tricksters bassist Klyph Black filled in for Skip Vangelas during last night’s Dark Star Orchestra performance at Port Chester, N.Y.’s Capitol Theatre. The bassist performed throughout DSO’s entire first set so that Vangelas—who has been the group’s bassist since 2013—could attend his son’s college graduation, appearing on an original setlist that kicked off with a run from “Shakedown Street” into “Hell in a Bucket.” Vangelas made it to the Cap in time to play the rest of the night.

Black’s appearance marked some of a Zen Tricksters reunion since Dark Star Orchestra’s current lineup features longtime Tricksters guitarist Jeff Mattson and keyboardist Rob Barraco. Zen Tricksters have only performed sporadically since Mattson joined Dark Star Orchestra in 2009.

Dark Star Orchestra will headline Keene, NH’s Colonial Theatre this evening. They group is in the midst of their 20th anniversary tour and recently created the Dead’s classic May 8, 1977 Cornell show on that gig’s 40th anniversary.
