Sam Cohen sat in with Kevin Morby during his sold-out show at New York’s Bowery Ballroom on Wednesday night. The guitarist, who produced Morby’s 2016 release Singing Saw, emerged at the tail end of the night’s encore for a cover of the Velvet Underground’s “Rock and Roll.” Morby’s forthcoming release City Music is a tribute to New York City full of references to Lou Reed, Jim Carroll and other area luminaries. Morby also paid tribute to Bob Dylan on his 76th birthday with a take on “Tonight I’ll Be Staying Here with You” and nodded to his former band Woods by recounting the first time they played Bowery Ballroom when he was only 19.

Morby will perform at Allston, MA’s Boston Calling today. He will also partner with Cohen, Joe Russo, Eric D. Johnson and Josh Kaufman for an “Alone & Together” performance at Rhode Island’s Newport Folk Festival on July 28. The musicians first came together during the Last Waltz tributes at Port Chester, NY’s Capitol Theatre on Thanksgiving Eve.
