Last night at the Capitol Theatre, Phil Lesh took to the stage with a big band that featured Robert Randolph, Karl Denson, Jackie Greene, Ross James, Tony Leone, Jason Crosby, Alex Koford and The Preservation Hall Jazz Band. Denson sang the opening “Shakedown Street,” during a first set that saw Greene and Ross James share vocals on the “Jack Straw” that followed, with Greene also singing lead on “Bertha” and “Ophelia.” The latter tune, written by Robbie Robertson for The Band, was a highlight thanks to the contributions of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. The exploratory second set opened with a fully-segued sequence that began with “Help on the Way” and continued through “Slipknot!,” “Franklin’s Tower,” “Viola Lee Blues,” “Cumberland Blues” and then “Viola Lee” once again.

Phil & Friends will return to the Cap tonight with Neal Casal, Robert Randolph, Karl Denson, Jackie Greene, Ross James, Tony Leone, Jason Crosby and Alex Koford.
