Bassist Oteil Burbridge emerged as a lead vocalist with Dead & Company last night. During the group’s performance at Mountain View, CA’s Shoreline Amphitheater, the bassist assumed lead vocals on “China Doll” during the group’s second set. As previously reported, Burbridge hinted that he would supply lead vocals on a few songs with Dead & Company this summer, though “China Doll” is a somewhat unexpected choice. He sang “Franklin’s Tower” with the Allman Brothers Band for many years and tackled “Dark Star” and “Turn On Your Lovelight” with Joe Russo’s Almost Dead more recently. Bob Weir sang lead on “China Doll” the last and only other time Dead & Company played the From the Mars Hotel tune in late 2015.

Dead & Company will return
to Shoreline this evening.
