Charlottesville bar Miller’s, maybe best known as the breeding ground for the early formation of the Dave Matthews Band, came under protest last week after facing criticism for serving white supremacists following a tiki-torch procession led by white nationalist Richard Spencer in nearby Lee Park.

As CVille.com reports, a confrontation between “whites-righter” Jason Kessler and members of Showing Up for Racial Justice took place as Kessler dined outdoors at Miller’s. The incident ended in the arrest of Jeff Fogel, who is a Democratic candidate for the Commonwealth’s attorney’s office. Fogel, 72, was arrested for assault after allegedly shoving Kessler.

For their part, Miller’s responding to criticism for serving the members of the white nationalist group, taking to Facebook to say that “while the restaurant cannot realistically monitor the personal lives of all of its patrons, we also cannot allow people to sow division and discord from our business. Miller’s proudly stands with those who seek equality and fairness in society and against those who wish to divide us.”

Miller’s has been a fixture in the Charlottesville community for many years, famously housing a young Dave Matthews and nurturing the local music scene that birthed DMB as well as many of their longtime collaborators like Butch Taylor, Tim Reynolds, John D’Earth and many others. D’Earth also still plays a regular Thursday night gig at the bar.
