Soulive continued their Bowlive VII residency at Brooklyn Bowl last night, welcoming old friends and newer guests for choice covers and originals that made for a full evening of improvisation and jazz-infused funk music.

The trio kicked off the night with a first set starting with a few originals before welcoming longtime collaborators The Shady Horns for “Uncle Jr.” and the remainder of the first set.

Set number two introduced the special guest of the night, guitarist John Scofield, who led the way in the improv department for much of the night, including the set opener of his own “Whatcha See is Whatcha Get.” Another of his tunes, “Boozer,” would later surface amidst a flurry of covers, which began with Marcus King coming out for an extended take on the Allman Brothers Band’s “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed,” which saw nearly everyone on stage take a solo and nodded to the recently departed ABB founders Gregg Allman and Butch Trucks. Watch a video of that collaboration below.

King, who will also participate in Bowlive tonight with George Porter Jr., stuck around to lend his powerful voice and solo chops to B.B. King’s “Sweet Little Angel,” while drummer Alan Evans took vocals on the set closing cover of Jimi Hendrix’s “Hey Joe.” The night then ended with Soulive, Scofield, King and the Horns reunited for “Turn On Your Lovelight,” a song that will long be associated with Col. Bruce Hampton, who passed away after collapsing onstage while playing the tune, one of his favorite.

On Wednesday, Soulive brought out saxophonist Grant Kwiecinski, a.k.a. GRiZ, to join The Shady Horns, along with Son Little and vocalist Ida Hawk.
