Last night, Dead & Company’s summer tour rolled through Bristow, VA, for a show at Jiffy Lube Live, and the band added a new tune to their expanding repertoire.

To close out the evening’s first set, which kicked off with some Grateful Dead all-time favorites like “Shakedown Street,” “Uncle John’s Band,” “Althea” and “Bertha,” the band played the calypso classic “Man Smart (Woman Smarter),” a song that became a staple in the second half of the Dead’s touring career.

Set two began with the rousing “Playin’ in the Band” and included a “Fire on the Mountain” that led into a “Drums/Space” that in turn segued into a jam based around “A Love Supreme.”

The entire evening had an overtly political theme inspired by the show’s close proximity to Washington, DC as well as a few band members’ meetings with Senators Al Franken and Patrick Leahy yesterday). The most overt references took place at the end of the group’s second set and encore, as Dead & Co. moved from Bob Dylan’s “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall,” a return to “Playin in the Band,’ “Throwing Stones” and “U.S. Blues.” They then emerged for a “U.S. Blues” reprise that segued into a slow-closing “Liberty.”
