Phish’s Baker’s Dozen: Chocolate-Themed Covers and Expansive "Chalkdust" Highlight Sixth Night

Phish approached the halfway point of their Baker’s Dozen run with a chocolate-themed show in honor of the double chocolate donut handed out upon entry.

Once again, the night’s flavor weighed heavily on the setlist as Phish took the stage for an acapella rendition of “Chocolate Rain,” the viral video from 2007. Page McConnell utilized a small midi controller keyboard for the song and following the performance, Jon Fishman was left standing at the mic for the opening verse of “Ass Handed” before retreating to his station for the musical portion of the song.

The set picked up with a loose, funk-driven “Free” as well as the first “Weigh” since August 9, 2015 that gave way to a fiery “Undermind” led by Trey Anastasio. More oft-played cuts like “Oh Kee Pah Ceremony” and Chilling Thrilling cut “The Dogs” along with the first “Destiny Unbound” of 2017.

An anthemic and boisterous “Divided Sky,” the McConnell tune “Things People Do” and a “Sand” with patient, full-band interplay capping the set.

The second set yet again spanned just six songs, opening with a rare “Have Mercy,” the first of 2017. From there Phish launched into “Chalkdust Torture,” a relentless, 24-minute version that only seemed to pick up steam as it continued. All four members drove the improv through various sections touching on funk and ambient themes throughout.

While the long jam was the centerpiece of the night, the big surprise came next as Phish unveiled their cover of Hot Chocolate’s hit “You Sexy Thing” complete with Mike Gordon vocals and another funk jam that led into “Mercury” with more expansive improv filling the set. From there, more standard rock numbers “Backwards Down the Number Line” and a euphoric “Rock and Roll” closed the set.

For the encore, Phish had more chocolate surprises as the final verse to “Fee” was changed to “have a chocolate donut and catch your breath” before ending the song and closing the show with another acapella song, David Bowie’s “Space Oddity.”

Phish return to the stage tonight for a cinnamon-flavored night.
