The String Cheese Incident and Umphrey’s McGee kicked off this year’s Lockn’ Festival with interlocking sets as the two traded off with two sets each over the course of four hours.

The final set, played by Cheese, featured a collaboration with the two as the band welcomed out Brendan Bayliss, Joel Cummins and Andy Farag of Umphrey’s McGee for a cover of the Allman Brothers’ “Jessica.” Watch the performance above.

Cheese and Umphrey’s both used their platforms last night to address the current social climate and the violence in nearby Charlottesville. String Cheese came together at the front of the stage for a speech that encouraged love and Umphrey’s McGee commented more bluntly, with a cover of Talking Heads’ “Making Flippy Floppy” that includes the line “our president’s crazy.”

Lockn’ continues today with sets from Jim James, Gov’t Mule with Ann Wilson and Phil Lesh teaming with Bob Weir and the Terrapin Family Band for a 40th anniversary celebration of Terrapin Station.
