A number of well-known players from the jamband scene have formed a new project known as Katharsis. The psychedelic-funk ensemble will bring together drummer Dave Watts (The Motet), bassist Chuck Jones (Dopapod), keyboardist Todd Stoops (RAQ) and guitarist Marcus Rezak (Digital Tape Machine). As the new project explains, “The ancient spelling of a word which means finding spiritual renewal by way of a psychic journey through music and art. With that in mind, these four musicians have a mission to use the power of psychedelic funk to reveal the cathartic experience of live music. They have long been friends and shared mutual admiration for each other’s playing, and now they have come together to embark on a musical journey of the body and mind.”

In July, Katharsis spent three 16-hour days writing, recording and improvising at Rollinsville, CO’s Mountain Star Studios. The results will be featured on the band’s debut LP. “Diabolical,” Katharsis’ first single off their forthcoming album, is now available below. The song was written and produced by
Dave Watts and engineered by Andrew Lundsford. The second half of the number was completely improvised in the studio.
