Joe Russo’s Almost Dead continued their run at Brooklyn Bowl with a show that coincided with Scott Metzger’s 40th birthday, as the band opened the show with 40 “hits” as an intro to “Throwing Stones” to mark the occasion.

The group then moved through a number of lengthy jams, particularly in the following “Jack Straw” as well as the first “Weather Report Suite” since April 22, 2015. At the conclusion of the first set, the band presented Metzger with a birthday cake and the crowd sang “Happy Birthday” before the band departed the stage.

Another jam-heavy set awaited Almost Dead as “Good Morning Little Schoolgirl,” played for the first time in just over a year, kicked off the final set of the night. The band also dipped into their other covers repertoire with the first version of Radiohead’s “The Bends” since Halloween 2015 and just the second overall JRAD version, though guitarist Tom Hamilton has covered the song for years with his various projects. He even officially released a version of the song on Electron’s live album This is Electron, featuring Russo on drums.

The set closed with longtime friend of the band and violinist Katie Jacoby emerging for the final two songs of the night, “Tennessee Jed” and “Truckin’,” the latter of which morphed into a “Born Cross Eyed” jam. Almost Dead closed the show with Bob Dylan’s “Tell Me Momma” with Jacoby in tow as well.

The run continues tonight.
