Jackie Greene returned to The Warfield in San Francisco last night for his annual birthday celebration, which once again featured an array of guests including Phil Lesh and Greene’s current tour mate Anders Osborne, plus a run of songs to honor the late Tom Petty and a full set of Grateful Dead tunes.

The evening kicked off with the duo of Greene and Osborne, with the two playing a short set that featured songs from each songwriter’s catalog. After a set from Osborne’s band, Greene returned to the stage with his own group. After a few of his own songs, Green led the band in a five-song tribute to Petty, playing a selection of the late icon’s classics, “Running Down a Dream,” “Learning to Fly,” “Into the Great Wide Open,” “Mary Jane’s Last Dance” and “You Wreck Me.” The remainder of the set focused on Greene’s material, with Osborne again joining him for “So Hard to Find My Way,” “Like a Ball & Chain,” after which Greene’s birthday was acknowledged with a round of “Happy Birthday.”

The final set was an all-Grateful Dead affair with Greene teaming up with Osborne, Phil Lesh, Grahame Lesh, Elliot Peck, Alex Koford and Stu Allen. The collective ran through a collection of Dead favorites, starting with “Bertha” and moving through “Friend of the Devil,” “Althea,” “Scarlet Begonias” and “Sugaree” before closing out with the classic run of “Help on the Way,” “Slipknot!” and “Franklin’s Tower.” The evening then closed with and encore of Greene’s “Sweet Somewhere Bound.”
