After a wildfire benefit show in San Francisco, Dead & Company kicked off their fall tour proper with the first of two shows at Madison Square Garden in New York.

The show featured a variety of some of the band’s more familiar tunes throughout their short lifespan but did include a couple of surprises including the very first Dead & Co version of “Beat It On Down the Line” played in the first set preceding Jerry Garcia’s “They Love Each Other” and the “Cumberland Blues” first set closer.

The second set once again relied on the familiar, like “China Cat Sunflower” and “I Know You Rider” as well as a second set “Ship of Fools” and the Dead opus “Terrapin Station.”

In the encore, the band called an audible by adding the usual Grateful Dead Halloween cover in Warren Zevon’s “Werewolves of London” to the end of the show after “Samson and Delilah,” which was originally written as the lone tune to close the show. This marks just the second time the band has covered the tune, with the last coming on their 2015 Halloween show at the same venue.

Dead & Co. return to MSG tomorrow night for the second night of the run.
