For the third night of their triumphant return to Madison Square Garden, Phish served up a 16-song show that featured both fan favorites and unexpected bust-outs.

The band opened set one with a blistering “Mike’s Song” before slowing things down with “I Am Hydrogen.” Not soon after, the crowd cheered at the sound of Gordon’s signature “Weekapaug Groove” intro, officially cementing a “Mike’s Groove” jam arc.

After a brief pause, Phish kept the heavy-hitters coming with a 20-minute “Tweezer” that featured plenty of exploratory guitar work. The jam concluded with a slo-mo refrain, before Fishman took the spotlight for his own “Ass Handed.” Later, as the band was deep into a 14-minute “Bathtub Gin” jam, Trey was visibly tapped into the rooms energy, leading the band into several peaks.

“Brother,” was the bust-out of the night. Played often in the early ’90s, the tune hasn’t been heard live since 6/17/2012 (216 shows). Phish then segued back into their newer material with a set-ending “More.”

A five-song set two opened with a raucous, unfinished “Down With Disease” that led into an oscillating type-2 jam. A heavy “Steam” jam followed, with plenty of ambiance provided by Fishman on marimba lumina. “Light” emerged from the thick layer of “Steam,” and after a quick departure with “Farmhouse,” the band laid into a scorching “Run Like An Antelope” to cap off the set.

For the encore, Phish dusted off “Sleeping Monkey” (last played 7/23/2016) and brought the evening full circle with the always amplified “Tweezer Reprise.”

Phish returns to the stage tonight for New Year’s Eve.
