Umphrey’s McGee returned to Denver’s Fillmore Auditorium last night for round three of their year-end run, and the band rang in the new year with a three-set offering that featured a guest horn section.

Set one kicked off the night with just Umphrey’s themselves playing original tunes like “Nothing Too Fancy,” which bookended the set, “1348” and “Make It Right.” The second frame saw the band welcome out the Mad Dog’s Filthy Little Secret horn section, who have helped UM celebrate New Year’s Eve in the past. The section featured Michael “Mad Dog” Mavridoglou on trumpet, Dave Matthew’s Band’s Jeff Coffin on saxophone, Chris Ott on trombone and Josh Quinlan on saxophone.

With the horn section supporting, Umphrey’s delivered a second set that kicked off with “Turn & Dub” and featured a “Utopian Fir” that segued in and out of Huey Lewis & The News’ “I Want a New Drug” before the band closed the frame with their own “Glory.”

The closing set opened with live staple “Wappy Sprayberry,” which led the band into “Auld Lang Syne” to welcome 2018. The group’s first song of the new year was, appropriately, their live debut of new track “The Silent Type” off their upcoming studio album it’s not us. The third set also featured UM’s debut of The Police’s “Canary in a Coalmine.” The band later closed out the night with an encore of Prince’s “I Wanna Be Your Lover.”
