EOTO, the experimental side project of Jason Hann and Michael Travis, have released the first installment of a mini-documentary explaining their improvisational techniques.

The video, entitled Part 1- How We Do It (A Behind The Scenes Look), shows the String Cheese Incident percussionists playing a number of synths, drums and MIDI pads to create a wholly improvised musical creation.

“Excited to present a more modern version of our setup and talk through what we’re doing each step of the way,” the group said in a statement accompanying the video.

“No backing tracks for us,” they write later. “Every sound you here is played by us in the moment. We improvise song structure, rhythm, and melodies to make it feel like there’s one song blending into another – spontaneous composition – but we love to keep people dancing throughout this sonic journey.”

Following String Cheese Incident’s recent New Year’s run, neither SCI nor EOTO have any upcoming tour dates.
