Round Records Confirms Before the Dead Jerry Garcia Box Set

Before the Dead, an upcoming, limited-edition box set detailing the early works of Jerry Garcia, will be released on May 11 via Round Records. The collection was curated by Dennis McNally—Garcia’s friend, publicist and Grateful Dead biographer—along with documentarian Brian Miksis.

The box set, which features five vinyl LPs or four CDs plus a 32-page book, contains music that spans a duo performance with Robert Hunter at Garcia’s girlfriend Barbara “Brigid” Meier’s 16th birthday party on May 26, 1961 (with Garcia on acoustic guitar) through an appearance by the Asphalt Jungle Mountain Boys during the summer of 1964 (in which Garcia appears on banjo).

The recordings included on Before the Dead were restored and mastered by Fred Kevorkian. The first release from the collection is a performance of “Rosa Lee McFall” from The Black Mountain Boys in 1964, which can be heard in the video below.

Before the Dead can be pre-ordered here. See the LP tracklist below, and learn more about the project in this recent Relix feature in which McNally and Miksis discuss how the compilation came together.
