A little before 9:30 p.m. on Saturday Night, Joe Russo’s Almost Dead took the stage at New York’s Brooklyn Bowl, capping off an exciting three-night run that already featured nods to Pigpen McKernan and multiple debut covers.

Saturday was no different, with the band opening set one with a first-ever performance of the Rolling Stones’ “The Last Time,” sung by Scott Metzger. As the set rolled on, the band punctuated “Shakedown Street” with teases of Radiohead’s “Myxomatosis” and later created a new “Last Time Jam” to connect “Crazy Fingers” with “Truckin’.” (The aforementioned “Crazy Fingers” also featured a nice improvisational section between keyboardist Marco Benevento and guitarist Tom Hamilton.)

Set two opened with a freeform jam, with elements of “Scarlet Begonias” woven throughout, and then bled into an instrumental “Slipknot!” as well as a debut version of the Built To Last tune “Foolish Heart.” Interestingly, “Slipknot!” reemerged later in the set, giving the band the chance to lay down more of Radiohead’s “Myxomatosis.” The teases kept coming on the tail end of set two, with “Franklin’s Tower” bringing back elements of “Foolish Heart” and also kicking off a montage of “Throwing Stones” instrumentation. “Throwing Stones” led into a rocking debut of Led Zeppelin’s “Good Times Bad Times,” then, after a segue back into “Throwing Stones,” JRAD dipped into a partial version of The Band’s “Chest Fever.” They closed set two with one final “Throwing Stones” reprise.

As is appropriate at any mid-weekend show, JRAD encored the evening and closed out the three-night run with “One More Saturday Night.”

JRAD’s spring tour continues March 15 in Syracuse, NY. For a full list of tour dates click here.
