Phil Lesh returned to The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, NY, last night for the second of three shows with The Terrapin Family Band, and the Grateful Dead bassist celebrated his 78th birthday with a two-set affair of Dead classics.

Lesh and his frequent collaborators Grahame Lesh, Ross James, Jason Crosby and Alex Koford, plus special guest guitarist John Scofield, kicked off the night with less-played cut “Mason’s Children” (which was recorded for but not included on Workingman’s Dead) before rolling into “Tennessee Jed” and a cover of Bob Dylan’s “It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue.”

Next up was a cover of New Riders of the Purple Sage’s “Henry,” which was included in the band’s 1971 debut album, which featured Dead members Jerry Garcia and Mickey Hart. The first set then rounded out with “Playing in the Band” into “I Know You Rider.”

Before the second set, Lesh was honored both by Cap owner Peter Shapiro, who presented the bassist with a birthday cake, and the First Assistant Chief of the Port Chester Fire Department (which is known for its Grateful Dead fandom), who gave Lesh a Dead-themed fireman’s helmet and a plaque making him an honorary member of the department.

The nearly seamless second set started with “The Music Never Stopped” before another cover, Led Zeppelin’s “No Quarter.” After “Shakedown Street,” the band dove into another surprise cover of Funkadelic’s “Get Off Your Ass and Jam” before the set flowed into Dead favorites “Dark Star,” “Help On the Way,” “Slipknot!,” “Casey Jones,” “Franklin’s Tower” and “Morning Dew.” The night ended with the encore staple “Ripple.”

See the full setlist below as it appears in our Box Scores section, along with some video from the night. Lesh and company return to the Capitol Theatre stage tonight for round three.
