On Sunday night, a number of musicians and friends of the late John Perry Barlow came together at The Fillmore in San Francisco to honor the memory of the late poet, activist and Grateful Dead for a night dubbed “Barlow’s Graduation From Meatspace.”

The night kicked off with a introduction from Bay Area icon Wavy Gravy, followed by the first music of the night from The Soul Rebels. Carolyn Garcia, also known as Mountain Girl, then shared some words before a video showed “Ramblin’” Jack Elliot sharing a story.

The next music was from Jerry Joseph, Wally Ingram and Steve Kimock, who played one tune before the first of two larger bands took the stage. Talking Heads keyboardist Jerry Harrison was joined by Bob Weir, Sean Ono Lennon, Kimock, Ingram, Robin Sylvester and The Soul Rebels for “Heaven,” “I Need a Miracle” and “Take Me to the River.”

The evening also included a video from Edward Snowden, who spoke about his relationship with Barlow and Barlow’s activism regarding internet freedom, more speakers, music from Barlow’s daughters and more, including a closing set from a band featuring Lukas Nelson, Weir, Lennon, Sylvester, Ingram, Alex Koford and Harper Simon. The collective ran through a few Barlow-penned Dead tunes, “Hell in a Bucket,” “Estimated Prophet,” “Feel Like a Stranger” and “Cassidy.”
