Brendan Bayliss and Jake Cinninger of Umphrey’s McGee returned to their former hometown of South Bend, Ind. on Tuesday, April 24, along with an opening set by UM keyboardist Joel Cummins and a surprise appearance by percussionist Andy Farag.

The duo kicked things off with a version of live favorite “August,” containing a tease of Fleetwood Mac’s “Rihannon” (perhaps a nod to the recent turmoil within the ’70s rockband’s camp). They then segued into the debut duo version of “Similar Skin,” before heading back into “August.”

The show was full of teases and surprises, with musical references to everyone from Bruce Springsteen to Lynyrd Skynyrd. The two musicians also swapped instruments often. Bayliss played mandolin on Pearl Jam’s “Elderly Woman Behind The Counter In A Small Town” and tried out piano on the opening encore of Elton John’s “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.”

UM fans were also treated to an unannounced sit in by fellow UM bandmate Andy Farag. The percussionist – as well as keyboardist Joel Cummins – sat in for the second half of the single set, adding extra oomph to originals like “Cut The Cable” and “Women Wine and Song.”

The encore started with the aforementioned duo version of Elton John’s “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road,” and closed with the four present members of UM taking on their own “Hajimemashite” and finally Bob Seger’s “Night Moves.”
