Dead & Company kicked off their summer tour on May 30, at Mansfield, Mass.’ Xfinity Center, busting out some classic jams and showcasing their fine-tuned improv skills.

After a first set that included a somewhat shaky “Shakedown Street,” with Bob Weir flubbing a lyric or two, the band hit their stride in the second half.

Fans were elated to hear an opening “Scarlet”> “Fire” jam; the latter featured bassist Oteil Burbridge singing lead vocals. After an equally pleasing “Althea” (and a heavy tease of “The Other One”), keyboardist Jeff Chimenti and Burbridge took turns laying down impressive solos on “Eyes of the World.”

As the clock inched closer to 11 p.m., the band explored a cosmic “Drums”> “Space” segment, followed by a “Stella Blue” and an uplifting “Touch of Grey.”

Presumably due to the venue’s curfew, the band took a bow at the top of the hour, and left the stage with no encore.
