Kamasi Washington will release his new album, Heaven and Earth, this Friday, June 21, and today the jazz saxophonist and bandleader shared the video/short film that accompanies his single, “Street Fighter Mas.”

The video, directed by A.G. Rojas and presented in a pseudo-silent movie fashion, plays along with the song’s intent—to be a theme song for Washington as he enters to do battle in the classic video arcade game—by depicting Washington on his way to an epic showdown with Combofiend, a legendary Street Fighter player. The video also features cameos from fellow Street Fighter icon Gootecks and BattleCat (a.k.a. Kevin Gilliam), an LA collaborator of Dr. Dre, Tupac Shakur and others who Washington notes as one of his hometown heroes.

“I love inhabiting Kamasi’s world, and ‘Street Fighter Mas’ was an opportunity to take a left turn and explore the surreal qualities of that world,” Rojas says. “When Kamasi told me the background of the song, how Street Fighter was a safe space for him—it took me back to the supermarket down the street from my childhood home where my brother and I would try and get in as many games before our mother was finished shopping. It was a true labor of love for everyone involved, coming from a desire to interpret the cinematic qualities of the track into something equally unpredictable, familiar, absurd and ultimately triumphant.” Watch the video below.

To celebrate this week’s release of Heaven and Earth, Washington will be playing an intimate hometown show at LA’s World Stage tomorrow, June 21, which will be streamed live for free on Washington’s Facebook page and Boiler Room.
