The Avett Brothers took the name of the Outlaw Music Festival seriously on June 20, when they covered Merle Haggard’s “Mama Tried.”

The classic cowboy tune – which later became a favorite of the Grateful Dead – came on the tail end of the Avett’s single-set performance at Charlotte, NC’s PNC Music Pavilion.

They also welcomed Mickey Raphael to the stage for some nice harmonica work. A longtime member of Willie Nelson’s band, Raphael added some extra spice to the cover, which the Avetts have been playing fairly regularly since 2016.
