The Allman Brothers Band and the Owsley Stanley Foundation are set to release a newly restored and mastered version of “Bear” Stanley’s recording of an early ABB performance at the iconic NYC venue Fillmore East, when they opened for the Grateful Dead in February 1970.

Allman Brothers Band Fillmore East February 1970, set for release on August 10, takes from the band’s opening slots on February 11, 13 and 14 of that year and is part of Stanley’s legendary “Sonic Journal” recordings. Just over a year after these shows, ABB would record their seminal live album At Fillmore East.

The collection features the earliest known live recording of the ABB instrumental classic “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed,” plus a 30+ minute “Mountain Jam,” “Whipping Post,” “Statesboro Blues,” “Hoochie Coochie Man” and more. See the tracklist below.

“I had no prior experience with mixing their music, so I hope you don’t mind the rough edges in my mixes here,” Stanley wrote in the original liner notes. “There was a wonderful feeling at these concerts that made the shows a lot of fun for us all…I had a good time working at these shows, and I hope you will have a good time listening to this historic early Allman Brothers Band.”

Fillmore East February 1970 will be available August 10 via Allman Brothers Band Recording Company. Stanley’s full recordings of the three nights in 1970 will also be available via the Owsley Stanley Foundation.
