For their second night in San Francisco, Phish offered up a brand new original, dubbed “Keepin’ It Reel,” at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium.

With 3,500 fans in attendance and scores more watching a free online stream, the band kicked things off with an unlikely “Roggae” (the last time it opened a show was 8/2/98).

Phish followed up “Roggae” with a nice “Tube”> “NICU”> “Runaway Jim” segment and a classic “The Horse”> “Silent in the Morning” pairing.

Then came “Keepin’ It Reel,” a fast-paced, Mike Gordon-led tune that starts with the lyric, “Yes, I realize, not all the world’s a stage.” In another unexpected move, the band followed “Keepin’ It Reel” with “Driver,” a late-‘90s era Farmhouse track that was last played on 7/16/16 (show gap: 62).

The first half kept moving along, with “Saw It Again” and “Ocelot,” which clocked in at around 10 minutes and was the lengthiest jam of the set. “Waking Up Dead” preceded the set’s final jam of “Backwards Down the Number Line”> “More.”

Set two gave the band more room for improvisation, with a setlist almost half as long as the first. Phish segued through “Set Your Soul Free,” “Twist” and “Makisupa Policeman,” which always provides some levity onstage. From there, the band dove into the middle of “Scents and Subtle Sounds,” followed by “What’s The Use?” “The Wedge” and, finally, “Possum.”

Phish encored their final night in San Francisco with fan favorite “The Lizards.”
