The surprises kept coming this weekend at Newport Folk Festival, as Mumford & Sons played an entirely unannounced set on Saturday, welcoming Brandi Carlile, Mavis Staples, Hiss Golden Messenger and more to the stage.

The band opened their set with their Sigh No More track “Awake My Soul,” featuring Carlile, singer-songwriter Maggie Rogers and dobroist Jerry Douglas.

Alone, Mumford & Sons then dipped into their repertoire, performing “Broad Shouldered Beasts,” “The Cave,” “Little Lion Man,” “White Blank Page,” “Lover of the Light” and “Tompkins Square Park.”

Indie-folk singer Phoebe Bridgers then lent her voice to a cover of Radiohead’s In Rainbows track “All I Need.”

A little later, Carlile emerged once again to sing versions of Simon & Garfunkel’s “The Boxer” and The New Basement Tapes’ “Kansas City.”

Mumford & Sons played their own “Dust Bowl Dance,” and then invited Rogers to sing her song “Alaska” off her 2017 effort Now That the Light is Fading.

The Mumfords played one last original – “I Will Wait” – before a star studded cast of musicians, including Mavis Staples, Phil Cook, MC Taylor of Hiss Golden Messenger, Carlile, Rogers and Bridgers, sang The Band’s “The Weight.”
