Bill Graham Presents Name Changed to SFX
Sadly, the name Bill Graham Presents is no more. The San Francisco company
was bought for $65 million two years ago by SFX Entertainment and in April,
the name will be changed. "We are the largest live entertainment company in
the world,'' said Mike Farrel, chief executive officer for SFX. "We are at
the point where we want to brand our company. We are taking this step for
two reasons. One, we want to build a countrywide brand name, and two, we
are a public company that wishes to expand its stockholder base.'' Bill
Graham was a legend in the music business, producing and promoting shows at
the Fillmore West in San Francisco, the Fillmore East in New York City, as
well as hundreds of Grateful Dead shows dating back to the Warlocks days.
Graham worked with nearly every major act of his generation, including the
Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, the Allman
Brothers, Jefferson Airplane, Jimi Hendrix, Van Morrison and Janis Joplin.
He is also responsible for introducing the world to Carlos Santana at
Woodstock in 1969. Graham died in a 1991 helicopter crash near Vallejo, CA.

Gamelan Offices Destroyed in Fire, Shows will Go on
The office building which houses Boston-based production company Gamelan
Interactive, along with numerous other businesses, is currently engulfed in
flames from a five-alarm fire. All Gamelan employees have escaped without
injury, but everything in the office was completely destroyed. "I just hope
that everyone in the building is alive," says Gamelan owner and talent buyer
Andrew Stahl. "We lost everything. We're confused, but we're gonna
regroup." WHDH News in Boston is reporting that the fire started in a
dentist office in the building just before noon. "We were just sitting there,
Andrew and I, advancing some production for this weekend and Todd (Walker)
said he smelled smoke," says Gamelan employee Steve Robinson. "Howard
(Turkenkopf) and I looked out the window and the building was on fire. We
went outside and watched it burn to the ground."
Gamelan Interactive's booking department represents Jiggle the Handle,
Soulive, John Brown's Body, The New Deal, Addison Groove Project, Dr. Didg

Dave Fiuczynski to Play with Oteil and the Peacemakers
Dave Fiuczynski will join Oteil Burbridge and the Peacemakers February 15 at
Wetlands Preserve in New York City. Fiuczynski will also be performing with
his own band, Kif, in the lounge before joining the Peacemakers on the main
stage. "He's gonna play the whole gig with us," says Burbridge. "He's one
of my favorite musicians of all time. We used to check out his band, The
Screaming Headless Torsos and everyone in the ARU was just freaked out by
them. He's just amazing and we actually did get to play with him at that
time. When I moved to New York in November or December, I started going over
his house and we would just play together. So I've been jamming with him
over the last few months and really been having a blast. I was gonna get a
keyboard player for the (Wetlands) gig and then I decided since Dave's
already there, I might as well have him be the proverbial keyboard player.
His knowledge of chords is just so advanced. I'm really looking forward to
it." Tickets for the show are available now through
Ticketmaster and at the
Wetlands box office with no surcharge.
Ancient Harmony Added to Lauan Compilation
Lauan Records has announced that Ancient Harmony will be the third band
featured on Three Sets Volume 2. The album is a compilation that also
includes Larry and Wise Monkey Orchestra. It is a follow up release to
Three
Sets, which features Jiggle the Handle, Day By the River and Vinyl. In
addition to pricing the compilations very inexpensively, Lauan Records also
plans to donate a portion of the profits to charity. "We intentionally
price these compilations at $8.00 because we feel that CD prices have grown
to exorbitant levels," says Seth Goldberger of Lauan Records. "With these
compilations we are trying to give something back to the jam band community
as a whole; the fans get an amazing album at a great price, the artists
get a
great deal that helps them gain national exposure, and more than half of the
proceeds
go
directly to the artists and charity. Basically, everyone wins." Three
Sets
Volume 2 is expected to be released in May. For more information,

the entire scene at heart." Porteus adds, "SonicNet is fired up about

Phish Tribute Album Planned
The non-profit Mockingbird Foundation has announced
that it is assembling an album featuring a range of artists
covering original Phish compositions. The Foundation has approached a
number of musicians who have performed with the band to request
live and/or studio tracks. Foundation board member Ellis Godard states,
"To say I've been pleasantly surprised by reactions is an understatement,
given the caliber of acts invited thus far. That these artists have been so
receptive to the idea is a testament to the significance of Phish and
their music." The Foundation, which is in the process of completing "a
definitive Phish encyclopedia," will donate all profits from sales of the
book and the album to charitable organizations. The working title of the
release is "The Mockingbird Tribute" which Godard indicates mirrors the
book ("Project Mockingbird") and "continues the simplicity Phish espouses
in their own titles (e.g. A Picture of Nectar and A Live One)." The
Foundation anticipates announcing the final line-up by the end of February
with a tentative release date of Summer 2000. For additional information
on the album and the book visit the organization's web site at

Aid). The Phoenix Presents series, which began with Jiggle The Handle and
Blueground Undergrass, will offer a number live performances in the months

Peach Corps and Allman Brothers Band Foil Scalpers
The Allman Brothers Band's on-line fan group, the Peach Corps, has
taken the extra effort to strike back against scalpers. A few weeks ago,
the band had allowed members of the Corps to participate in a pre-sale of
tickets to its upcoming Beacon Theatre run. After learning about
some suspect sales based on the volume of tickets sold to certain
entities, the Corps painstakingly checked the list of purchasers versus
its own database. After discovering over a hundred inconsistencies the
Corps successfully asked the ABB, the Beacon and Ticketmaster to
invalidate these unauthorized sales. The Corps then reoffered these tickets
to its members.

Marathon Grateful Dead Broadcast
David Gans, of the Grateful Dead Hour, will host the 15th Annual KPFA
Grateful Dead Marathon, Saturday, February 5, from 9 a.m. to 1 a.m. The
sixteen hour event is a fundraiser for the public radio station. "What's
extra special about it this year is that it's gonna be webcast via
dead.net
in a way that everyone will be able to hear," says Gans. "There will be a
combination of things including several complete shows and some thematic
things and rarities. I've got an interview with Mickey Hart that will come
with some music, including some unreleased Planet Drum stuff. There will
also be some old rehearsal tapes and old recording sessions of the Dead. I'm
also working with the archivist in the vault, pulling out some really special
things that no one's ever heard before and I'm trying to cover material from
different eras. Another thing that is different about this year's marathon
is that probably most of the material that I play on this program will
not be
heard on the regular Grateful Dead Hour. I want to make it really an
extremely thrilling day for Dead Heads. I want it to be an all day
adventure."
KPFA broadcasts at 91.4 FM in Northern California. If you're interested in
helping to answer the pledge phones at the station, call 1-510-848-6767 ext.
400. Gans is also taking requests for the show at
Dead.net.
Big Brother is Listening
New technology now allows the world's largest concert promoter and venue
operator, SFX Entertainment, to learn what radio station people are listening
to as they drive into venue parking lots. This information is very valuable
to businesses tracking marketing campaigns. The device, designed by
Mobiltrack, monitors the frequency of the station playing on a vehicle's
radio, by detecting emissions from the radio's oscillator. SFX has installed
the system in 13 locations, including Los Angeles, Phoenix, Atlanta and The
TweeterCenter in Mansfield, MA.

Harvest albums," says Reprise Records spokesperson Bob Merlis. Young
recorded with singers Emmy Lou Harris and Linda Ronstadt and both are
expected to be featured on the album. Songs that will be on the album
include "Good to See You," "Silver and Gold," "Daddy Went Walkin'," "Buffalo
Springfield Again," "Great Divide," "Horseshoe Man," "Red Sun," "Distant

Disco Biscuits Release Statement Regarding Marc Brownstein's
Departure
In the wake of bass player Marc Brownstein's pronouncement
regarding his departure from the Disco Biscuits, the group has issued its
own collective comment. The statement reads, "We are sure that the news
you all received today was shocking. It was
however brought about by a need for change, either in our personal or
musical lives. Although we have matured and developed viciously fast
over the past few years we have been stifled musically because of
personality conflicts. The circumstances are unfortunate, but we feel the
decision is mutual and in the best interest of all involved for a long and
happy future, privately and professionally. The Disco Biscuits will
continue to create the craziest music possible in a new capacity, a
capacity that is not hindered by individual differences. We thank you for
your love and support and we look forward to raging together in the new
millennium." The band's tentative spring plans call for studio time and
more live shows, although the group has not announced whether it will
perform as a trio or expand its core line-up.

asked to leave the band. Although I am shocked at this decision, I wish to
emphasize that the last 5 years have been a most unbelievable experience.
And, as I have been left without a choice, I have no regrets. I would
like to
thank everyone for their undying support and I will miss you all greatly."
Marc Brownstein and Disco Biscuits management are unavailable for

The famous hot dog that Phish rode in before their midnight set on New Year's
Eve will be on display at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. The
hot dog is currently en route to the Museum Building, where it will hang in
the main atrium. "We heard from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum
staff early in 1999 looking for stage memorabilia of any kind," says Phish
Archivist Kevin Shapiro. "They mentioned stage costumes, old instruments,
etc. We thought of the hot dog idea and proposed it to them...The items
borrowed from Archives include the Phish soda and the fries used with the hot
dog on 12/31/94 so those should be a part of the display. We plan to work
with them on display details and hope some pictures or stories will be part
of the display too." Shapiro says he expects the hot dog to be on display
for two to three years, but final details are still being determined.
Meanwhile, discussions are underway for the Meatstick Time Capsule from the
