Grateful Dead Productions Considering Corporate Deal?
There is discussion that Grateful Dead Productions is considering an Internet
deal with Microsoft to distribute the contents of the Dead's vault via MP3.
"There's been talk about mounting an internet site in company with major
investors - m'soft et al - using the vault as collateral and painting the
walls with ads, but there's also a counter-wind which blows from the center
of a 'certain particular' ... one which I feel is gaining thrust as the year
stumbles and hops to an end," lyricist and
Dead.net webmaster Robert Hunter
said in a post on Dead.net last week. On Monday, Phil Lesh responded to the
news. "A couple of months ago, our CEO approached us with a proposal from a
major venture capital firm to start a new company with the vault as
collateral," says Lesh. "I won't go into the details, but I will say that
GDM is financially sound and not in need of fresh capital. In fact, the
proposed buyout could jeopardize jobs held by longtime employees. I am and
always have been absolutely against venture capital money buying or
'licensing' the vault or Grateful Dead goodwill. This proposal is the reason
for the serious rift between the other board members and myself. I have come
to the very sad conclusion that the Grateful Dead is no longer a band but a
corporation whose board members no longer have a common vision. After having
been given a new life, I refuse to spend it creating a new 'business
paradigm' with venture capitalists who are trying to squeeze yet more money
out of the remains of a great experiment." However, today Hunter stated that
the deal seemed unlikely. "Due to the marked distaste of key personnel for
potential conflict with the free, unfettered administration of our own
property, it seems less than likely that the contemplated merger will occur."
Grateful Dead publicist Dennis McNally has no comment on the issue at this
time. For more information, visit

Not That Phish
The liner notes to Dr. Dre's latest album, Dr. Dre 2001, credit "Phish" with
backing vocals on the track "What's the Difference." However, it is not the
Vermont-based quartet you're thinking of. "Phish" also happens to be
the name of one of Dr. Dre's friends in the hip
hop community.
