Now the quartet will perform two sets on Saturday May 24 along with The Flaming Lips, RJD2, Josh Ritter and Bassnectar. While the Disco Biscuits will not perform until next week, drummer Allen Aucoin will appear with his DrFameus project this Saturday night, May 17, at Mellow Mushroom in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

Cornmeal, Jen Hartswick, Lubraphonic, Members of Umphrey's On Hand To Party For USTORM

Last night at Martyrs in Chicago, the USTORM Foundation hosted its latest benefit show. The evening included music from Jack Straw, Lubraphonic and well as an extended set that drew in a variety of performers. Cornmeal took the stage for the initial portion of the concluding set, with Umphrey's McGee's Joel Cummins adding keys to a cover of "Bennie and the Jets." Cummins then backed Jen Hartswick, as she played trumpet and sang "At Last" with Cornmeal's Chris Ganji participating as well. Cummins' UM bandmate Ryan Stasik then stepped up for a version of MMW's "Bubblehouse" that also featured Hartswick and the Lubraphonic horns. Lubraphonic later anchored the closing segment that included covers of "Sugaree" and "People Get Ready." Brendan Bayliss, who co-founded USTORM along with Kevin Kostelecky, Mike LeMaistre and Jack Straw's Barry Brown, attended and assisted with a raffle but did not perform, as he is recovering from recent hernia surgery (although during said raffle he reportedly revealed his scar to those in attendance). United So Together Our Reach Multiplies is a non-profit organization aimed at raising funds to help needy children and young adults improve their lives by providing access to various music and art educational programs.

Aoxomoxoa and Live Dead at the Warfield

As Phil Lesh counts down the final days of the Warfield Theater with his current group, he continues to work his way through the Grateful Dead's recorded catalog. On Tuesday, the first night of Phil & Friends five show run, the group covered Grateful Dead and Anthem of the Sun. Last evening Lesh charged onward, delivering Aoxomoxoa and then Live Dead. Mark Karan joined the group on guitar during the second set take on the celebrated live release. MMJ: “I Don’t Think I’ve Ever Been More Pumped Up and More Nervous and Anxious”

“For all I knew, it was like a coffee house,” singer/songwriter Ben Folds says. “I had no idea. And then we walked out on stage and there’s like 60,000 people.”

But, even if Folds hardly knew what he was in for when he first took the stage at Bonnaroo back in 2006, but his second time around he’s prepared to play to a crowd he finds surprisingly knowledgeable and refreshingly respectful given the sheer size and scope of the festival.

“It’s nice to look out and see people and feel people that get it. What you’re seeing on mass is a much more intelligent picture of young humanity”

Folds addressed reporters as part of a Bonnaroo Press conference, which also featured candid comedian Jim Norton and My Morning Jacket’s own upbeat percussionist, Pat Hallahan.

Of all the bands on this year’s bill, My Morning Jacket is one of the most heavily anticipated, as they prepare to release their 5th studio album just three days before making their 5th appearance at the ‘Roo.

“I think the initial change over from home life to touring life is a little crazy”, Hallahan admits, “but it’s just like anything You jump into it and it becomes like breathing very natural”.

Hallahan felt very natural fielding inquiries about his band, their new album and their epic three-hour long late-night set at their last showing in 2006.

“How do you even put that into words. I mean, I think that that was one of the most electrifying experiences of my life personally and I'm sure within the band’s existence, it was just something out of the heavens that’s for sure. I don’t think I’ve ever been more pumped up and more nervous and anxious to hit a stage in my entire life.”

Hallahan is excited to once again be playing the midnight slot on Friday night with a new crop of material to unleash upon the equally anxious crowd. Currently the band is brainstorming ways to one-up the 2006 performance.

“Well, we were trying to hire Ganesh to come hover over the crowd for the majority of the set, but that kind of proved to be out of our budget. So we’re going to the drawing boards right now. That’s all I can say for right now. We’re not having any floating gods.”

Spiritual beings respectfully declined comment, though comedian Jim Norton was eager to answer questions, looking forward to the festival as both a performer and a fan and offering Bonnaroo audiences a backhanded compliment with his characteristically blunt style of observational humor.

“I’d just feel really stupid if I offended a bunch of people who are barefoot on acid. That was great last time I was there though. There was no problem. [The fans were] all kind of hanging back, having a good time, and this crowd is really hard to offend.”

The 2008 Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival takes place from June 12 to 15 in Manchester TN. For more on My Morning Jacket please read the June issue of Relix, featuring an interview with Hallahan and his bandmates conducted by Grace Potter. Report by Dan Schneier

Bob Weir Joins Phil & Friends for Grateful Dead and Anthem of the Sun

Last night Phil Lesh & Friends opened a five-night run at San Francisco’s famed Warfield Theater. To the surprise of nearly everyone in attendance, Lesh and his friends ran through a complete version of the Grateful Dead’s 1967 self-titled debut during their first set, with Bob Weir joining his estranged bandmate for “Cream Puff War,” ”Morning Dew,” “New Minglewood Blues” and “Viola Lee Blues.” Weir returned at the start of Lesh’s second set as the bassist jumped headfirst into the Dead’s 1968 sophomore effort Anthem of the Sun, which includes classics like “That's It For The Other One” and early rave-ups such as “Alligator.” At the end of the night, Lesh closed his set with the Buddy Holly sing-a-long “Not Fade Away.” With eight sets and eleven albums to go, it’s a fair bet that Lesh will run through the Grateful Dead’s entire recorded canon over the next few days. Phil & Friends will return to the Warfield this evening. As of press time, the venue's future is uncertain.

5/8/77 DVD and The Road to the Roo

On May 8, 2007, Dark Star Orchestra performed in Ithaca, NY to commemorate the thirtieth anniversary of the Grateful Dead's celebrated 5/8/77 performance at Cornell. While the Dead gig took place at Barton Hall, DSO delivered a sold out show at the State Theatre during which Ithaca Mayor Carolyn Peterson declared it to be "Grateful Dead Day in the City of Ithaca." Dark Star Orchestra will now share its performance (unlike the Grateful Dead which thus far has resisted the call to release 5/8/77, in part because so many crisp copies circulated over the years which helped to build the reputation of the show). 30 Years Later: The Video is a double DVD available at all Dark Star Orchestra performances and at the band's website.

The group currently is not gigging but will pick up the pace on May 25, when it embarks on its Road to the Roo Tour, which will culminate (as you can well imagine) with a performance at the Bonnaroo Music Festival on June 12.

Meanwhile, after a series of performances with JFJO in support of the band's new disc Lil Tae Rides Again, Mathis will now return the road with Tea Leaf Green.

However, the filmmakers have announced that "due to unforeseen circumstances," the premiere has been postponed. Although tickets will be refunded, the producers have stated they intend to reschedule the event in the near future.

Looking ahead, Porter has also confirmed that he will both perform PBS and participate in some sort of “superjam” on the New Orleans stage at Bonnaroo this June.

Electron Resurfaces for the Chemical Warfare Brigade

Marc Brownstein, Aron Magner, Joe Russo and Tom Hamilton performed together as Electron last night for the first time since 2006. The gig took place at Denver, CO’s Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom on an off night from the extended Twisted Conspiracy Tour, which finds Brownstein, Russo and Hamilton backing the British electronic act Younger Brother and Brownstein and Magner performing as Conspirator. As they hinted last week, Electron’s first set was a complete version of Brownstein’s Chemical Warfare Brigade rock opera, which includes songs like “Little Lai,” “And the Ladies Were the Rest of the Night,” “Shelby Rose” and “Floodlights,” the latter of which featured a guest appearance by STS9’s David Murphy. On the heels of their recent Jammy nomination in the Show of the Year category, the good folks at USTORM will host another benefit concert this week. The gig will take place at Chicago’s Martyr’s this Wednesday, drawing together members of Umphrey's McGee, Jack Straw and New Groove winners Cornmeal, along with special guest Lubriphonic. Judging by past USTORM benefits, the gig should feature a number of special guests and unique collaborations.

In other Umphrey’s McGee news, this Thursday drummer Kris Myers will open for Blind Melon at Chicago’s Metro as part of the band Van Ghost. The Chicago-based group, which is spearheaded by local hero Michael Harrison Berg, features another familiar face: Jennifer Hartswick. Umphrey’s McGee will perform at Summer Camp on May 23.
