We would also like to say 'thank you' to all the fans who have reached out to Jim with their well-wishes as we all hope for his speedy and full recovery." This will leave James with some time to recover since the group's next confirmed show is not until December 27 at the Chicago Theater (MMJ also will appear at the venue on the 28th, as these dates were rescheduled from October 9 and 10). Joss Stone Joins HeadCount Benefit

Joss Stone is the latest addition to HeadCount’s pre-election Get Out the Vote Party. As previously reported, the non-profit organization will host a party at New York’s Highline Ballroom on November 3, the night before the 2008 general elections. Stone joins an already impressive mix of musicians, including Robert Randolph, ?uestlove, Stanton Moore, The Benevento-Russo Duo and The Disco Biscuits’ Marc Brownstein and Aron Magner, among others. RANA/American Babies guitarist Scott Metzger has been named the evening’s musical director and will perform with a number of the evening’s entertainers.

Stone will offer a number of songs, including the new composition “Governmentalist.” The song is also available for free download at both www.HeadCount.org and www.JossStone.com. The track is also slated to appear on Stone’s next album, which will hit stores next year.

“The U.S. election really does impact the entire world,” Stone said in a statement. “While I can’t vote in this country, I want to do what I can to inspire others, especially young voters, to make their voices heard. I can't think of a better way to release 'Governmentalist' than to partner with a group like HeadCount that actively encourages voting."

“We're excited to welcome Joss to the long list of musicians who’ve become involved with HeadCount,” said HeadCount co-chair Marc Brownstein. “Speaking for myself and all the other musicians who are performing, I can tell you we¹re all excited about sharing the stage with Joss.”

The concert will be the final event of HeadCount’s year-long campaign to mobilize young voters. The entire evening will also be webcast through iclips.net.

JJ Grey & Mofro will perform at Philadelphia’s World Café Live tonight and New York’s Highline Ballroom tomorrow.

MMJ Reschedule Chicago Shows

My Morning Jacket will perform at the Chicago Theater on December 27 and 28. The group was originally scheduled to headline the venue earlier this month but postponed its performances after Jim James injured himself onstage in Iowa. Tickets purchased for the group’s previously scheduled October 9 show will be honored on December 27, while tickets purchased for the band’s October 10 performance will be honored on December 28. For those unable to make the show, refunds will be given at the point of purchase.

A note on the group’s homepage says the follow:

As some of you may have heard we had to cancel our show last evening in Iowa City. We were finishing up the last few bars of "Off The Record and just like any other night we were all having a great time. Jim went to get closer to the audience on his side of the stage, and as he moved forward to step onto the sub-woofer the lights darkened, and he inadvertently stepped off the stage. Upon falling, he suffered traumatic injuries to his torso, and was immediately taken to the hospital.

For those who attended the Iowa City show, we would like to extend our gratitude for your understanding and cooperation. We take our fans and performances very seriously, and would never cancel a show unless it was absolutely necessary. Please know that we will be making every effort to return to your fine city.

Thank you so much to our fans for the kind sentiments and well-wishes on Jim's behalf. We hope for Jim's quick recovery and to be back out on the road soon.

As previously reported, My Morning Jacket will headline New York’s Madison Square Garden on December 31. The group will also begin a European tour at Dublin’s Tripod on October 29.

Rob Marscher Sits In with Umphrey’s McGee

Umphrey’s McGee is currently two shows into a three-night run at New York’s Blender Theater. As expected, while in town the group caught up with some old friends and, Tuesday night, Matisyahu keyboardist Rob Marscher stepped in for a version of “40's Theme” at the end of the group’s second set. Marscher first befriended the members of Umphrey’s McGee while performing in Addison Groove Project and has collaborated with the group a number of times over the years, including at the group’s fabled CBGB performance. Umphrey’s McGee will close its run with another performance at the Blender this evening.

Omega JOIN Weekend

The New Deal's Jamie Shields and Darren Shearer will travel to Colorado for a series of shows in early December. On Thursday, December 4 at the Fox Theatre in Boulder, the two will pair with Umphrey's McGee's Brendan Bayliss and Ryan Stasik for an Omega Moos performance. Then on Friday the 5th, Shields and Shearer will team up with Marco Benevento & Joe Russo for a show as The JOIN. The tour will then wrap up the next night, at the Aggie Theater in Ft. Collins with another performance by The JOIN.

Prior to then, The New Deal will return to the stage over Halloween weekend in California, starting on October 30 at the Hollywood Knitting Factory.

Col. Bruce Hampton, Oliver Wood and Yonrico Scott Bid Geoff Achison Farewell

As Geoff Achison’s stint as a Georgia resident sadly nears its close, his pending departure has inspired some great moments of cross-pollination. Last Friday night Geoff joined Derek Trucks, Tommy Talton, Mike Mattison and Michael Allman (with his proud papa reportedly on hand to watch) as guests of the Yonrico Scott Band at Atlanta’s Five Spot, and just weeks ago Achison performed with Les Paul in New York City.

However, while Geoff has a handful of US gigs left, this Monday’s “Farewell To Acho” show at Shorty’s Pizza will probably be remembered as the true going away party. A group of Achison’s most loyal fans and band mates gathered at Shorty’s Pizza in Tucker, Georgia and the collaborations were plentiful.

The evening started with the core trio (Achison on guitar, Charlie Wooton on bass and Yonrico Scott on drums) running through a few numbers including “Tell Me Something I Don’t Know” from Achison's Souldiggin CD. Guitarist Jody Davies then joined for an interesting take on “Chitlins Con Carne,” “A.D.D. Man” and Achison’s “Rule The World.” Deji Coker joined on sax for a nice medley of “Never Give It Up” and “Reach For The Sky” to close the first set.

The Atlanta music scene was on display during the second set with a slew of local musicians joining in at various points (including Jordan Gonzales, Evelyn Richardson and Todd Prusin). This culminated with Achison, Scott, Oliver Wood (Wood Brothers, King Johnson) and Rob Henson (Corey Smith Band) performing Sam and Dave’s “Hold On, I’m Coming” and Achison’s “Jungle” and a Wood-sung “Something You Got.”

The final set started with Colonel Bruce Hampton joining for deliciously extended takes on “Born In Chicago” and “Spoonful” (with Barry Richman from Hampton’s Planet Zambie joining for the latter). Many of the performers alternated with Jon Schwenke, Greg Baba and Kevin Leahy (Bodeans, Shawn Mullins), while a powerful, three-piece horn section (Coker, Mark Kraemer, David Hibbert) also stepped up for “Messin’ With The Kid” and “The River’s Invitation” with REM producer Johnny Hibbert on keyboards.

Achison will return to The States this January for a brief tour which will include at least three performances on the 15th Annual Delbert McClinton Sandy Beaches Cruise, however his shows later this week in Chattanooga, TN, Sandy Springs, GA and Dahlonega, GA will be his final ones as an area resident. Report by Rob Turner

Uncle Sammy Returns

Uncle Sammy, which last performed in June 2005, reunited this past weekend in California. The occasion was the wedding of guitarist Max Delaney at the the Stinson Beach Community Center in Stinson Beach, CA. Serving as the wedding band was the Nate Wilson Group, which features Uncle Sammy drummer Tom Arey. At one point during the evening, Delaney, Arey, bassist Brian O'Connell and keyboard player Beau Sasser were enticed to perform, delivering versions of the Grateful Dead's "Shakedown Street" and A.J. Croce's "Way With Woman," both of which were somewhat regular covers in the Uncle Sammy repertoire. In addition, O'Connell also sat in with the Nate Wilson Group for a portion of their set.

Hollingsworth, Porter, Krasno, Deitch and the Pearl Street All-Stars Return

This Saturday, October 18, the Boulder Theater will host a celebration for the 15th birthday of Boulder's Mountain Sun Pub & Brewery. As in past years, the Pearl Street All-Stars will take the stage for a show that will benefit KGNU, Boulder County's only non-profit community radio station. The All-Stars will be comprised of George Porter Jr., Kyle Hollingsworth, Eric Krasno, Adam Deitch and Hazel Miller. The core quintet will be augmented by the 14th Street Horns: Danny Sears (Panjea) Dominic Lalli (The Motet) and Jon Stewart (The Motet).

Steve Molitz, Zac Lasher and Rob Salzer Join The Breakfast

This past weekend, The Breakfast performed in Colorado as a trio, where guitarist Tim Palmieri also did some double duty, sitting in for missing keyboard player Matt Oestreicher. During these gigs, the group enlisted some of the musicians who shared the bills to share the stage as well. As we noted yesterday, on Thursday, Particle keyboardist Steve Molitz appeared for a version of his group's "Metropolis." Then on Friday at Dulcinea's 100th Monkey, U-Melt's Zac Lasher lent keys to "Hard Luck Harry." Finally, on Saturday at Quixote's True Blue, Molitz returned and U-Melt guitarist Rob Salzer also stepped up for a cover of Phish's "You Enjoy Myself" as well as Breakfast original "Gladys Pimp and Kangaroos with Me."

Oestreicher is now back on the road with The Breakfast, performing through October 25, after which RAQ's Todd Stoops will close out the year with the band.

Matisyahu's Festival of Light

Once again, Matisyahu will celebrate Chanukah with a series of New York City performances. The third annual Festival of Light will take place over eight nights, with a range of additional musicians opening the shows. The first four dates will be at Webster Hall, on December 21 (with an opening unannounced special guest DJ Set), December 22 (with The Leevees), December 23 (with U-Melt) and December 25 (with Easy Star All-Stars). Then the action will move to the Music Hall Of Williamsburg for shows on December 27 (with Asher Roth), December 28 (with Assembly of Dust), December 29 (with Little Jackie) and December 30 (with Brett Dennen).

Matisyahu will open his fall tour this Saturday, October 18 in Milwaukee.

Fishman and "The Wayfaring Stranger"

With folks receiving initial word on their Phish tickets, it seems appropriate that we close our day with some news from the Vermont Quartet’s camp. Jon Fishman played a series of shows over the weekend, first with Yonder Mountain String Band and later with the Everyone Orchestra at Asheville, NC’s Loki Music Festival. In addition to Fishman and Matt Butler, this incarnation of the Everyone Orchestra featured Marco Benevento, Papa Mali and Jonathan Scales, as well as Barrel House Mamas’ Molly Rose Reed and Eleanor and Toubab Krewe’s Justin Perkins and Luke Quaranta. Fittingly, the band offered a mix of almost completely improvised African and blues-based music, along with a cover of the traditional folk song “The Wayfaring Stranger.” The Everyone Orchestra then closed out its set with a group chant that “love is everywhere.”

In related Loki Festival news, a number of musicians sat in with JJ Grey & Mofro during their Sunday performance. Both Benevento and Inca Maya guitarist Matt Grondin took the stage for “Ho Cake,” while Papa Mali appeared on “Lochloosa.” Grey also popped on during Toots & the Maytals’ performance for a take on “Reggae Got Soul.”

Blues Traveler, The Brakes to Appear on CBS

Two acts associated with Jambands.com will appear on CBS in the coming hours. First, this evening Blues Traveler will appear on the The Late Show with David Letterman in support of its new studio album North Hollywood Shootout. The group’s appearance is tentatively slated to start at 12:35 AM EST. In addition, John Popper will sit in Paul Shaffer & the CBS Orchestra.

Then, at 6:30 AM Wednesday morning, The Brakes will appear on Philadelphia’s CBS 3 Morning Show. The former New Grooves will offer a few acoustic songs and discuss The Night Walk for Leukemia, which will take place in Philadelphia this Saturday. The band will also perform at South Philadelphia’s FDR Park prior to the event. Earlier this year the young group lost its drummer, Josh Sack, to cancer.

Widespread Panic to Play Rare Club Show

Widespread Panic will make a rare club appearance at New York’s Fillmore at Irving Plaza on November 19. Tickets for the show---a benefit for the Bill Graham Memorial Foundation---will go on-sale Saturday, October 18. The jam-titans will be in the city to accept the first-ever Road Warrior award at the Billboard Touring Awards. As previously reported, the ceremony will be held at the Roosevelt Hotel on November 20. According to Billboard, the new award “was conceived to recognize work ethic, steadfast dedication to touring year after year, and a commitment to the art and craft of live performance.” The Allman Brothers Band and Bon Jovi will also be honored separately the Billboard Touring Awards.

Widespread Panic first performed at Irving plaza on November 14, 1992 and headlined the room four additional times before graduating to Roseland Ballroom in late 1995. The band also returned to the intimate club on June 13, 2006 to celebrate the release of the studio album Earth To America. The sextet’s next headlining appearance will take place at Memphis, TN’s Mud Island tomorrow.

Members of Umphrey’s McGee, Phish, the Disco Biscuits, The Duo and the New Deal Collaborate Over Columbus Day Weekend

The past week proved to be a highly collaborative one for the members of Umphrey’s McGee and the Disco Biscuits. With the Biscuits off the road until December, Marc Brownstein and Aron Magner spent their time opening for Umphrey’s McGee as both the electronic duo Conspirator and as part of the band Electron (the latter of which also features Joe Russo and Tom Hamilton). Last Thursday at Clifton Park, NY’s Northern Lights, the paired performers did both, offering a surprise split Conspirator/Electron set.

As the tour progressed, the longtime friends collaborated with Umphrey’s McGee in a number of different settings. On Friday, both Umphrey’s McGee guitarist Jake Cinninger and drummer Kris Myers sat in with Conspirator at South Burlington, VT’s Higher Ground, with Myers reprising his role the following night at the same venue. Magner also sat in with Umphrey’s at Higher Ground for “Resolution,” shortly before both Magner and Brownstein appeared with the group on the Beatles’ “Dear Prudence.”

While in Burlington, Electron offered a rare matinee performance at the Club Metronome. Partway through Electron’s show, Mike Gordon took the stage with the quartet for a jam and remained onstage as the song segued into the Disco Biscuits’ “Home Again.” As many readers are aware, Gordon has toured extensively with Russo since first sharing the stage with the drummer in 2004. In 2005, the Phish bassist sat in with Russo and Brownstein at a L. Cool Trio show held at New York’s The Knitting Factory and, that summer, joined Electron at New York’s B.B. King Blues Club. Electron also co-headlined a club show at New Haven, CT’s Toad’s Place Sunday evening with the Omega Moos, a group that features Umphrey’s McGee’s Brendan Bayliss and Ryan Stasik alongside the New Deal’s Jamie Shields and Darren Shearer.

Finally, last night a number of the abovementioned players performed the New York’s annual Moogfest. The event, which celebrates the life of keyboard pioneer Robert Moog, took place at Manhattan Center’s Grand Ballroom, boasting performances by Umphrey’s McGee, Pink Floyd tribute band The Machine and the Eric McFadden Trio featuring Bernie Worrell. In addition, the evening featured the debut performance of the spacey, all-improvisational group Prison Shank, which draws together Stasik, Magner, Russo, Shields and Cinninger, the latter of whom played one of only eight new, Moog guitars. Late Show keyboardist Paul Schaffer also presented Worrell with the annual Moog Award before joining the keyboardist and the Eric McFadden Trio, while Shields helped Umphrey’s McGee close the evening with a run through “Abacab.”

Umphrey’s McGee will begin a three-night run at New York’s Blender Theatre this evening. Conspirator will appear next at Athens, GA’s Georgia Theatre on October 22.

The Dead Reunite for Obama Benefit, Lesh and Weir to Co-Headline New Year’s Performances

On Columbus Day, the four surviving members of the Grateful Dead’s classic lineup performed together at a benefit for Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama. The show, which was held at held at State College, PA’s Bryce Jordan Center, marks the first time Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann have performed together since August 19, 2004. In February, Hart, Weir and Lesh also shared the stage at San Francisco’s Warfield under the assumed name Deadheads for Obama. Immediately after The Dead’s performance, the group’s management confirmed that Bob Weir & RatDog would co-headline San Francisco’s Bill Graham Civic Auditorium on December 30 and 31 with Phil Lesh & Friends. Lesh’s current bandmate Jackie Greene will open both shows with his solo band.

At last night’s benefit, the members of the Grateful Dead were joined by Allman Brothers/Gov’t Mule guitarist Warren Haynes and RatDog keyboardist Jeff Chimenti, both of whom were part of The Dead’s lineup in 2004. The benefit also featured a performance by the current incarnation of the Allman Brothers Band, though neither group performed under its proper name due to the evening's political nature. Similar to their recent summer tour, the members of the Allman Brothers Band offered a single, extended set featuring chestnuts like “One Way Out,” “Mellissa,” “Jessica” and “Whipping Post,” in addition to covers of Van Morrison’s “And It Stoned Me,” Bob Dylan’s “Don't Think Twice It's Alright” and Derek & the Dominos’ “Anyday.” Susan Tedeschi and saxophonist Ron Holloway also sat in a various points throughout the night.

Likewise, The Dead offered a selection of classic sing-a-longs and improvisational vehicles, including “Truckin’,” “Touch of Grey,” “Playin’ in the Band,” “Dark Star,” “St. Stephen,” “The Other One,” “Unbroken Chain,” “Not Fade Away” and the sequence of “Help on the Way,” “Slipknot” and “Franklin's Tower.” The group also nodded to the evening’s political theme with “U.S. Blues” and “Throwing Stones,” as well as speeches by both Weir and Lesh.

The announcement that Weir and Lesh would spend New Year’s Eve together only furthers rumors that the surviving members of The Dead will tour together in 2009. Some also speculate that Hart and Kreutzmann will make a stealth appearance with their bandmates on New Year’s Eve as they did on December 31, 2001.

GDTS Too and Musictoday will begin accepting postmarks for the holiday performances on Thursday, October 16. Musictoday’s presale will begin at Noon, EST. Pre-sales for GDTS and Musictoday will conclude on Friday, October 31 at 6:00 PM EST. Public on-sale will begin Sunday, November 2 at 10:00 AM PST.

The Allman Brothers Return Home for 2008 Tour Closer

Before performing with The Dead at an Obama benefit in State College, PA, The Allman Brothers Band closed its 2008 tour with a two-night stand at Atlanta’s Chastain Park Amphitheatre. The hometown performances were the Allman Brothers Band’s only two-set shows of the year and, as such, featured some of the summer’s most diverse setlists. Both singer Keith England and The Lee Boys took the stage with the Allmans for “Southbound” Friday, while Derek Trucks’ brother Duane sat in on drums Saturday. After Friday’s performance, Warren Haynes and Oteil Burbridge also ventured accross town to sit in with the Lee Boys at Smith’s Olde Bar. Meanwhile, Derek Trucks went over to Little Five Points area of the city to play with the Yonrico Scott Band. Other guests with the YSB that night were Tommy Talton, Geoff Achison, Nick Johnson, nd Mike Mattison.

A few days earlier, The Allman Brothers Band finished a run of shows with Phil Lesh & Friends. While the short tour was largely collaboration-free, at Orange Beach, AL’s The Amphitheatre at The Wharf, Haynes took the stage with Lesh for “Built to Last,” shortly before Derek Trucks appeared on “Sugar Magnolia,” “Caution (Do Not Step On Tracks)” and a reprise of “Truckin’.’”

Particle Drafts Lesh and Kang for Pre-New Year’s Show

Though Particle’s touring schedule has slowed while keyboardist Steve Molitz performs with Phil Lesh & Friends, the trio will end 2008 on a high note. On December 27, Particle will headline San Francisco’s Great American Music Hall, three days before Molitz appears with Lesh at the nearby Bill Graham Civic Auditorium. Both Michael Kang and Lesh will join the group during its set, though the latter musician’s sit is being limited to “a special appearance.” Like other shows at the venue, a dinner option is available.

Kang also appeared with Particle this past weekend at both Boulder’s Fox Theatre and Denver’s Cervantes. The performances celebrated Particle’s anniversary and, to mark the occasion, featured a handful of new covers: Steve Wonder’s “Boogie On Reggae Woman,” Marvin Gaye’s “Inner City Blues,” Chris Robinson’s “Tumbleweed In Eden,” the Grateful Dead’s “Shakedown Street” and Raidohead’s “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger.” In addition, guitarists Brian Jordan and Lucas Bingham both sat in with the band in Denver, while Molitz joined opening act The Breakfast onstage in Boulder for "Metropolis.” Bingham is best known as the axe-man in Particle bassist Eric Gould’s side-project Big Man's Gold.

The Slip Will Return Before 2009

The Slip will make its first non-festival appearance in well over a year this December. The trio has spent the past few months backing singer/songwriter Sonya Kitchell and performing with Nathan Moore as Surprise Me Mr. Davis, but will offer a now rare straight-ahead set at Boston’s Paradise on December 27. The group’s only performance since mid-2007 took place at Quincy, CA’s High Sierra Music Festival this past July. Longtime friends the Benevento-Russo Duo will co-headline the evening, which is being billed as “potentially the Slip’s one and only Northeast performance of 2008.” Surprise Me Mr. Davis will also play a late night show with The Duo at New York’s B.B. King Blues Club on December 31.

Crosby & Nash Collaborate with Vampire Weekend at Music for Democracy Benefit

Late Sunday afternoon, the left-leaning political organization Music for Democracy hosted a Be the Change Launch Event at New York’s St. Raphael's Cathedral. In addition to short, acoustic performances by Crosby & Nash, Vampire Weekend and Israeli singer/songwriter Dan Reed, the concert boasted appearances by noted pundits David Bender (Air America Radio) and Jim Dean (Democracy for America), as well as a silent auction and VIP reception. At the end of the night, Crosby & Nash invited both Reed and the members of Vampire Weekend onstage for a spirited rendition of their hippie-anthem “Teach Your Children.”

The surprise sit-in is the latest victory for indie-sensations Vampire Weekend, a group that has scored an appearance on Saturday Night Live, the cover of Spin magazine and a nod of approval by David Byrne in the past twelve months. For Sunday’s performance, Vampire Weekend’s Chris Tomson also helped recreate the feel of Graham Nash’s classic arrangement by switching from drums to mandolin. The group will kick off a European tour at Birmingham, UK’s Carling Academy on October 20, while Crosby & Nash will appear at Westbury, NY’s Capital One Bank Theater this evening.

UPDATE: My Morning Jacket Postpones Show

My Morning Jacket has postponed a few upcoming shows after singer Jim James injured himself last night in Iowa City. My Morning Jacket was scheduled to closeout the U.S. leg of its fall tour with a two-night run in Chicago later this week. A message from the group explains the following:

As some of you may have heard we had to cancel our show last evening in Iowa City. We were finishing up the last few bars of “Off The Record,” and just like any other night we were all having a great time. Jim went to get closer to the audience on his side of the stage, and as he moved forward to step onto the sub-woofer the lights darkened, and he inadvertently stepped off the stage Upon falling, he suffered traumatic injuries to his torso, and was immediately taken to the hospital. Per the doctor's orders, Jim will be off the road and recovering from his injuries for the next two to three weeks. Sadly, we must postpone the two shows in Chicago on Thursday and Friday until further notice.

My Morning Jacket has also cancelled a Chicago benefit this evening. The group is still slated to begin a European tour at Dublin’s Irish Museum of Modern Art on October 29.
