Save Red Rocks

Red Rocks Amphitheater in Morrison, CO, is in danger of losing some of its natural beauty. The Department of Theaters and Arenas has proposed a project known as the Southern Terraces, which would destroy the natural grassy area to the south of the amphitheater in favor of cemented terraces comprised of bathrooms and concession stands. This is the same group who proposed corporate box seats and flashing logos at Red Rocks. In an effort to raise awareness of the situation and voice their opinions, a group called the Friends of Red Rocks is hosting a public meeting on Saturday, October 9 at the amphitheater. For more information, call 303-380-9366.

Summer Session/Hoodoo Bash Radio Reunion

Those fans who have enjoyed the jam band touring bills of the past two summers will be able to discuss the experience with some of the band members next weekend. On Sunday October 17, nationally syndicated radio host Al Handelman will welcome Reid Genauer, Warren Haynes and Al Schnier to his Rock Talk program. The three musicians will discuss their ongoing tours, forthcoming CD releases and other happenings. The program will offer listeners an opportunity to call in and ask questions of the three musicians. The radio show is broadcast on Sunday evenings over more than twenty-five FM stations nationwide. Both Galactic and String Cheese Incident have gigs on the evening of the 17th so their involvement remains unlikely. For more info on the program, including a list of radio affiliates visit www.alhandelman.com.

Blues Traveler will Remain Together

In the wake of bass player Bobby Sheehan's death, Blues Traveler has announced they will stay together. "We thought it would be useless to compound the tragedy by letting something we all, including Bobby, worked so hard for to fall apart," guitarist Chan Kinchla said in a statement released by A&M Records Wednesday. The record label also says the band made the decision at a meeting in New York City September 11. There has been no announcement as to who the new bass player will be, although sources say a well-known friend of the band may fill in for a few shows. Blues Traveler has also announced that they will not play the New Year's Eve concerts scheduled for December 30 and 31 at the Reno Hilton in Reno, NV. Instead, The John Popper Band will perform at those shows. Blues Traveler is expected to start work on their sixth album in January.

John Popper will be featured on "Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher" October 18 on ABC and "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" October 19 on NBC.

Iowa State May Ban Phish

As a result of thirty-five arrests in the aftermath of Friday's Phish's show in Ames, Iowa, the Ames Police Department is now taking steps to prevent Phish from returning to the Hilton Coliseum at Iowa State University, where the concert took place. "I've asked the university to ban them from returning to Ames because the followers that they bring in cause way too many problems," Ames Police Chief Dennis Ballantine told Jambands.com. "This is a fairly small community with a college. Friday night and Saturday we had thirty-five drug arrests. We had complaints from businesses of people trying to beg money off of customers who were out at stores. They just disrupted the entire community for the two days they were here." Although Ballantine cannot single-handedly ban Phish from returning, he's adamant about trying. "The city has no control whatsoever. It's not a vote issue. I don't know what the contract reads. I just asked the university to consider talking to the people that actually contract for those services (booking Hilton Coliseum) to see if they can work something out where we don't have to put up with that again." Ballantine did not know when the university would make a decision on the issue.

Bela Fleck and the Flecktones Add Halloween Show

Bela Fleck and the Flecktones have just announced they will perform a Halloween show at Kent State University in Kent, Ohio. The show has been added to their fall tour, which starts October 28 at the Calvin Theater in Northampton, MA and concludes November 19 at Tulane University in New Orleans. The band will also play four dates with The David Grisman Quintet, November 9-12 in Oregon and California. For a list of confirmed Flecktones dates, go to http://www.flecktones.com/tour.htm.

Popper Cancels 8 Shows

John Popper has canceled eight of his solo tour dates. According to a statement released by A&M Records, the decision was made for health reasons. "'The cause of the decision is due to the fact that the only opportunity for Popper to receive preventative guidance from a specialist based on the West Coast falls within these specific dates." However Popper himself blamed "nonexistent ticket sales throughout what is apparently the sparsely populated Midwestern region of the tour... I refuse to have this tour feel like work in any way. If it isn't fun or useful in even the most remote way, then I got no business being here now, and I got better things to do than talk to your ass. I blame my friend Howard Stern. He's got me so worried about my health that unless there's a real demand, I'm going to get help right now. But first I'm going to get some hookers." In a recent appearance on "The Howard Stern Show", Popper admitted that he now weighs over 400 pounds. He underwent angioplasty in July and doctors told him to lose weight. His solo tour will resume October 20 at the House Of Blues in Los Angeles.

John Popper Canceled Tour Dates:

Oct. 4 - Minneapolis, MN
Oct. 6 - Columbus, OH
Oct. 8 - Memphis, TN
Oct. 10 - New Orleans, LA
Oct. 12 - St. Louis, MO
Oct. 13 - Kansas City, MO
Oct. 15 - Denver, CO
Oct. 17 - Las Vegas, NV

Blind Man's Sun Performs 6-Week Musical

Blind Man's Sun is in the midst of a six-week series of shows entitled "The Sun Chronicles". It's a multi-media stage production being held Thursdays at the Elbow Room in New York City. The band has been handing out informational flyers at each show for fans that have missed any of the previous performances. "It's a historical account of Blind Man's Sun from their beginning in Syracuse, straight through to a completely fictional future where they're the biggest band in the universe," says manager Mike Chiappetta. "It involves video footage of them recording their first few albums and the demo, right up to fictional video footage that we've been filming over the course of the past four and five weeks about them playing theaters across the nation." The band performs their music in front of a projected video that includes narration and has an emphasis on comedy. The third chapter to the production is this Thursday at the Manhattan club. The saga concludes October 28.

New Strangefolk EP Released

Mammoth Records has released a new Strangefolk EP. It is comprised of five songs, all recorded live at this year's Gathering of the Vibes in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Jon Siket mixed the multi-tracked recording. The songs on the EP are "Lines & Cirles", "Poland", "All the Same", "Chasing Away" and "Rueben's Place". "Chasing Away" is a newer Strangefolk song, which may or may not be included on a new album, entitled A Great Long While, due out in February of 2000. The EP is a free promotional item available at www.liquidaudio.com. Fans can also obtain it at Strangefolk shows by signing the mailing list, changing their address if they've moved or signing the email list.
