I myself am taking my first trip out west (should be back before anyone reads this), but I'm looking fwd to hitting many of the shows upon my return, as should you J Keep the fine reviews coming. Gotta run. See you at the shows. -Tony
REVIEW B&P OFFER: (Analog or CD-R)
Just a reminder, I will pick one review each month with the winner receiving a B&P offer from my dat (analog tapes) or from my CD-R list (which is currently quite small, but growing), so let's keep them coming! I won't necessarily pick the most well written review; in fact, the winner will be somewhat random! Reviewers.please check this section to see if you have won! This month's winner is Chris Robinson. NEWS FROM NOWHERE * NEWS FROM NOWHERE * NEWS FROM NOWHERE
Editor's note: Friends.it is with a bit of sadness that I give you the following news. Though I hadn't seen these guys more than a handful of times; these guys had a great degree of originality in their sound and quite a bit of improv to their live shows- something that can be quite refreshing for someone who sees way too much music for his own good. On a personal level, they were all quite nice and very personable- you guys will surely be missed on the local music scene. -Tony
From the desk of Brad Slate. ~ALLSET Is All Done BOSTON, MA 9.21.99 - After 3 years, 2 CD's and over 300 shows ALLSET has imploded on itself, spewing cosmic debris in supernovaesque fashion to the far corners of the galaxy. Their unique psychoactive sound was most commonly described as "oozing liquid" but won't be oozing anywhere anymore. The decision came after the band's very successful national tour this summer. Although the tour was successful the decision was mainly prompted by MBB syndrome (music business burnout). The amount of energy and large financial investments involved in being in a band combined with the slim financial returns contributed to the band's decision. The band's music was 95% improvised every night and when the players are not in balance it readily appears in the performance. The decision to split was not unanimous but it was felt that line-up changes were not acceptable and total dissolution was the only course of action.
The band would like to thank the faithful that appeared at shows continuously over the course of its existence and the numerous individuals in the industry that assisted the band. ALLSET's CD's "Baker's Dozen" and "Gelatin in Vermont" are still available. To obtain them send email to webmaster@mer-ka-ba.com. Additionally the band will make its live archives available at their website. They have approximately 300 hours (100 shows) on DAT. Brad Slate, electric / MIDI violinist of ALLSET, would like to announce that he is available for work. Preferably with an established band but all offers will be considered. He requests PROFESSIONALS ONLY PLEASE. Any and all styles welcome from the swirling liquid-trance of outer space, the earthy tones of fast and fiery bluegrass to the microtonal scales and odd meters of the Middle East or anything in between. He is additionally available to produce or engineer your studio projects or create arrangements/orchestrations for any instruments or styles. He is currently working on his third solo album under the "Merkaba Field" http://www.drumming-about-you.com pseudonym. He can be reached at merkaba@mer-ka-ba.com or by voice at 781.324.2534.

SHOW REVIEWS: REVIEWS! REVIEWS! REVIEWS!
GENERAL SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:
I pretty much accept anything as far as reviews go, as long as they pertain to jambands.really, this is a very broad category, and I give a lot of leeway on this too. Of course, I reserve the right to not use anything or to edit them as I see fit. You will get full credit for reviews and I generally take a hands-off approach to editing, meaning I don't want to change the feel of your review- after all, YOU were there, not me. Some important things to keep in mind. Deadline! Our deadline is the 5th of the month. This may change in the future, but for now that is it. You can still send me your review if you miss the deadline; I may still be able to get it in, if not it will be used in the next issue. Please run "Spell-Check" before submitting your reviews. Also, if you are referring to song titles, please put them in quotations. When sending them in, it's best to just put them in the body of the e-mail or mail them as .txt. If you send something else there may be a chance that I won't be able to open it because of software incompatibilities. The best way to get a feel for what the reviews are like is by reading past ones. Remember you don't have to be a journalist or professional writer, you just had to be at the show. If you have any specific questions, you can always scroll on up to the top of this page and just send me an e-mail. I promise to be gentle. I guess that's it for now. Looking forward to getting some new reviews and reviewers in the coming months. -Tony
REVIEW: The Disco Biscuits - 9/11/99 Iron Horse Music Hall - Northampton, MA
By (MR) Don Cote
Set 1: Little Betty Boop > Pygmy Twylyte > Bazaar Escape, Bernstein and Chasnoff > Hot Air Balloon 2: Hot Air Balloon, Magellan, House Dawg Party Favor, Aquatic Ape* > Spaga** E: Plan B
* With "Mindless Dribble" tease.
** Completes 9/10 version. Bisco in NoHo.This show was the latter bookend of what was a very tight and impressive tromp through New England. The last of a four show run, it was the 2nd best next to the Higher Ground (9-8-98) in my opinion....no, maybe it was better.hmm.apples & oranges. whatevah. Before I begin...props to all the Biscuits kids who travel far and wide, who FLY from coast to coast, who drive 10-15-20 hours for a show or two, who read the list-serv religiously, who give it up....their souls, their minds, their bodies...at shows to create an energy that is truly unparalleled. Much love to you all. So we arrive in Northampton, a small quaint college "city", to a line as I've never seen before at a Biscuits show, sans Wetlands. Having already pre-purchased 10 tix for me and the peeps, we hustle and bustle our way to the front and walk right in. Yep, those bisco kids are pompous, nervy bastards...ha ha. Say hi to a few people and out the boys come. "Boop" opener. Pretty standard version that drops into Zappa cover "Pygmy Twylyte" before the 2nd verse. The jams out of "Pygmy" of late - have been monsters. This one did not disappoint. After much mayhem in "Pygmy" - that crazy techno-esqe shit ; we heard the opening notes to "Bazzar Escape". Huh? Jam *into* Bazaar? To my understanding, this has only occured 2 or 3 other times. I dunno. Ask sketch ( aka taper chick).
After a "Bazaar" that included some Happy New Year banter, the show basically started. The band asked the crowd what "Iron Horse" stood for, granting the winner the song pick of their choice. Someone answered correctly and said a train. To the chagrin of Mr. Brownstein, the lucky winner selected "Nughuffer"...haha, Nughuffer has rules, however, so they busted into "Bernstein and Chasnoff" instead. This is one of my personal favs, and with Marc B's new bass effects, this was a sick, sick, sick version. Base Balls are the shiz. During the end of "Bernstein", they got into an incredible improvised section that you would swear was composed, led by the dopest of dope, Sam Altman. This man (drummer) was *on* all night. After this crazy jaw dropping, tight as hell, portion (listen to it on tape as words cannot do it justice), the opening sounds to "Hot Air Balloon" started up. This being the Moosh's favorite song, Barber and he exchanged smiles during the beginning- that was something special. This "HAB" was actually a bit more intense than most, especially in the lyrical department. Barber was very pumped up and was belting out the words like I'd not seen him do before. Set break came upon us in the middle of "HAB"...just before the ending. 10 minutes later they were back up on stage finishing the "HAB". I don't think they've ever split this up before, especially not between a set break like that. But, as some of you may know, this is not your ordinary, generic, guitar driven jam band - these are the biscuits and they don't play by the rules.
After finishing "Hot Air Balloon", they go into what is probably their staple tune, "Magellan". One does not listen to a "Magellan";one experiences it. If you really pay much attention and ride the song from beginning to end, you do indeed go on a mystical journey. This was probably one of the most intense versions that I've heard. The kind of shit that makes you weep like a 2 year old. After the show most agreed that this was probably the highlight. I concurred. It was something special. Crazy, crazy "Magellan". Do they let up? Ha ha....once again, this is Bisco, so the answer to that question is -hell no! A little background info - the Biscuits debuted the best of their newest set of tunes, "House Dawg Party Favor", on 8-11-99 at the Wetlands. Needless to say, this has become a fav of most, played quite often to the chagrin of no one. Practically the entire crowd was yelling for it, and although they had just played it 3 nights before up in Winooski, the band obliged. Just take a listen to this song.it oozes bisco. Tight compositional part...almost classical in a way...very Barber-esque. The first jam has been pretty standard, but the way they come back into the composed part is mayhem. The 2nd jam out of "House Dawg" has been where it's at, and this one did not disappoint. City Boy is indeed out of his mind again...and again.
Up next? A Breather? "3 Wishes"? Ha ha ha ha.no way...out pops "Aquatic Ape", sort of a seldom played tune that most people tend to really dig and ask for quite a bit, so when it gets played, it's a pleasure. Out of the composed section, this song (which I've got blaring in my headphones right now, 5.7.99, one of the best) usually drops into a groovy jam, which makes you want to get down low and swim around; however, this "Ape" was a bit different. Instead, the Professor - Sam Altman - (did I mention he was on fire?) cued up the JUNGLE BEATS! We looked at each other with amazement and elation. I think beezley may have even peed himself. The professor has recently added this new style to his repertoire w/ the initiation of the new song, which in the interim we have deemed "Splattums", because that's what it does to you and for the belknapper. "Ape" proceeded in a very un-ape-ish fashion, and it was good. The professor yet *again* blows us away w/ the "dribble" tease. Can't remember how many times I muttered "yeah sammy" during these 4 shows. Out of "Ape" pops the ending portion of "Spaga"- Magner's tune. This was the finishing portion of the "Spaga" that was played the night before in Worcester. I wonder if any other band segues and plays endings and beginnings of songs in different sets and on different nights? Hmm. probably not. Anyhow, "Spaga" ends and I figured that would be the end of the show, but then we get a fairly rocking "Plan B"... a good way to close the run. Thanks to the Biscuits for blowing our minds yet again, all the Biskids who provide the love, the energy, and the positive vibes, and to the RHC, who just flat out kick ass. Also, gracias to Joe and Kristen for the post show throw down.
REVIEW: Half Step - 9/18/99 - University of Connecticut
Half Step; Good Times Had by AllBy John Kousch
My general philosophy is to make the most out of life every chance I get, as I am sure must of the general population that supports and follows jam bands also does. This is why on September 18, at the Carriage Houses of the University of Connecticut; "our" philosophy was put to ultimate use. Half Step started off the night opening with a fine rendition of "Bertha" to a small but devoted crowd and continued with some Dead classics such as "Standing in the Moon," "Built to Last," and "Not Fade Away." As the night and the party progressed, Half Step began to get into some original jams such as "The Guard" and a groovin "The Day" as well as a fantastic "Roach Jam" which had the crowd kickin up a storm. This was well anticipated because although I am a fan of the Dead, I appreciate original jams, especially ones of such overall musical quality as these. What sets this night of music apart from many I have participated in was the flow of emotion that seemed to spread over the crowd as the night progressed. One of the best covers of "All Along the Watch Tower" I have ever heard left much of the crowd with mouths wide opened. A sense of, "What just happened?" seemed prevalent. A buzz was sensed as time went by that these guys could really rip backed by evidence in their numerous other original songs. Everyone was not just yelling and like all to often at a concert, screaming like drunken fools, but listening and appreciating the music. It was a very pleasurable atmosphere. The lyrics were not as clear as I would have liked which is unfortunate because they are high quality, but the interplay between the members of the band more than made up for that.
To top the night off, one could only expect a huge closer, and did Half Step deliver. As Ken Donovan (bass guitar) spoke into the mike, "If you don't know this one, you better go learn it," I was eagerly awaiting a great crowd pleaser. With the circle of fans literally bumping into Ken's bass guitar because they were so close, "Like A Rolling Stone" sent the crowd into frenzy. Everyone there was singing and it was one of the more emotional moments of the evening, as everyone knew it would be a night to remember. When the last notes were left to vibrate through the crowd, everyone was cheering for one more, so the band stepped into an original tune, "Away", that had everyone exchanging smiles. The tone of, "We were lucky to be here to hear this," uttered by a fan was the consensus of the crowd.
When everyone dispersed at 2:30 in the morning, and after 5 hours of playing, Half Step was left to contemplate quite an eventful evening. As the lead guitarist Frank Donovan exclaimed, "It was the crowd that kept us going. You can only imagine what it is like to play for a crowd of people like that." Well, it is the followers of jam bands around the country that make nights like this possible. Rest assured, Half Step and the likes will continue to play for the pure love of making music hence making "our" philosophy ring true every time a good musical jam is heard.
Catch Half Step when you can, you will not want to miss them. Band members include: Frank Donovan (lead guitar, vocals), Ken Donovan (bass guitar, vocals), Kevin McGinn (rhythm guitar), and "Jay Bird" (drums)
REVIEW: Strangefolk/Percy Hill - 9/29/99, Lupo's, Providence
By Donny Grieco
SF set. Westerly, Mud Spring Drawl, All the Same, Bus Driver, Utterly, Lines & Circles, Take it easy on me, Blue Grey, Songbeard, Speculator, Cabin John, About 80, Sidestep Blues, So Far Gone>>Roads>>So Far Gone
(Tony mentioned that he doesn't get enough Strangefolk reviews so I decided to submit this one.)
This show was at one of my favorite New England Clubs, Lupo's in Providence. I've seen moe a few times there, Widespread for only $13 back in 96, as well ass the great Frogwings/Derek Trucks Brand show from last February. Needless to say, I was excited to see two bands that I am familiar with on a quiet Wednesday night. It was my 4th time seeing Strangefolk this year, 10th overall, and my 6th time seeing Percy Hill. I can't provide a Percy Hill setlist because I do not recognize any of their songs now that their line up has changed. I miss their old sound but I was really here to see Strangefolk. "Westerly" always gets the crowd pumped up. "Mud Spring Drawl" was nice. "All the Same" surprised me. They really jammed on the end part, more so than I've heard in any previous version. "Bus Driver" was cool, I hope it makes their upcoming album. I'm guessing that all unreleased tunes played on this tour have a chance, more on that later. "Utterly" is a new song that I'd never heard before.
At this point I notice the setlist taped in the soundboard, so that helped me with this review as I am not on the fan2fan anymore. "Take It Easy on Me" is one of there slower tunes that I don't care for. I like the faster stuff. "Songbeard" (aka Great Long While), is my favorite unreleased tune and I can tell they worked on it in the studio as the intro has changed a bit. It starts out with just Trafton instead of the whole band at one time, with the rest joining in after 4 bars. This version rocked, best I've heard and made up for the horribly butchered version from Somerville last April (Reid screwed that one up). "Speculator" is always welcome, one of those feel good songs that piss off those jamband elitists. "Cabin John" is also a fav of mine that I would love to make the new studio album. By this point things really kicked in as the first half of the show was rather tame. I noticed that the crowd gets all quiet during the unreleased tunes. This is truly a shame and I wish some of these people would get out there and get some tapes. Hell, email me (Iski100@aol.com) and I'll hook you up. Anything to make people more familiar with their lesser known tunes.
The finale of "So far Gone" was awesome. They completely surprised me with the segue into "Roads", a tune that I've heard way too many times, but hearing it as part of a segue sandwich made it all the better. Now I only wish they did more segues like this throughout the show, not just one a night. Overall, I had a great time and I hope they come back to Boston soon. Editor's Note: Donny is correct.I rarely get SF reviews so feel free to send some my way.folks! (bad pun intended ;)
REVIEW: The Slip - 10/02/99 - Iron Horse Music Hall
By Jim Crichton
The Slip gave the northeast a spectacular send off in one of the sweetest sounding rooms we have, the venerable Iron Horse. Leslie and Geoff opened with better than 1/2 an hour of great tunes, finishing with Andrew and Marc on stage for one which I'm sure we'll see them all do many times in the future called The Crickets, very neat.
Here's the setlist for The Slip:
Invocation Gecko> Zion> Moral Decay So Dope? (don't remember if this was played ;) Festival tune? (not sure of the placement of this one, definitely was played though :) Johnny's Tune A Crack In The Sundial Don't Foil The Moil* 54-46 Was My Number* Dogs On Bikes*w/Eric Krasno from Soulive/Lettuce
This was the last show in this region until Halloween, and they gave us one to hold onto for a while, the "Gecko>Zion" was intense, the festival tune was awesome, "Johnny's" had the whole place jumping. "ACITS" is such a beautiful tune, Brad delivered big time on the falsetto. There may have been a So Dope in there after "Moral Decay", I have to take my Alzheimer's meds :) The "Don't Foil" was a personal highlight, Eric and Brad played call and response through out, then the Toots and the Maytals tune in honor of the tix the Iron Horse used from a show back in '96, very funny ;) They finished with "Dogs on Bikes", noting that the first time they played it was here, and this version was frenetic, much faster than in Winooski on Thursday, where it was played as the 2nd song of set 2. It's definitely an encore tune.
Cheers, Jim
REVIEW: Allman Brothers Band, Tweeter Center, August 20 1999
by Chris Robinson.
[Editor's note- we are running this review somewhat late due to a miscommunication on our part- okay, okay we misplaced it.]
Let me say right off the bat that I was completely enthralled by this show. The Allman's seem to have new life this summer with the addition of Derek Trucks on slide guitar. There is a glow of pride on the faces of the old band members when Derek takes his solos.
Having followed the band for almost 10 years, I have never seen them have as much fun playing as they did this summer. For those of you who haven't seen Derek with his own band (DTB), it's a great opportunity to see a future legend in a small venue. From my 22nd row left-center seat, I thought the sound was near perfect - almost right from the get go. Having seen around 30 Allmans shows, I would put this one in the top 5. I would also say it was one the best 10-15 concerts of any band I've ever seen. This was one of those shows that somehow elevated my already lofty opinion of just how good this band is. Offhand, I can remember one Beacon show during Jack Pearson's tenure that affected me the way this one did and I can remember 3 Beacon shows during Warren Hayne's era that were at the level of Friday night. If you've never been to an Allmans show at the Beacon Theatre in March GO! I'm trying not to gush here, but I was just completely awed by this concert.
They opened with "True Gravity" and Derek absolutely soared. You've got to love a band that has the guts to start a show with a 15-minute instrumental! "Blue Sky" was incredible. Derek soloed for a couple minutes then backed off and I wasn't too impressed, but just as I was thinking that, he stepped back up and kicked it up a notch - extending the solo another few minutes. For a young guitarist, he has a an amazing sense of a proper "build" to a jam. Dickey was like a man possessed on his solo. Derek pushes him in a positive way without competing. I went in hoping to hear a few things that I hadn't heard in a while. I didn't get those tunes, yet I left feeling as if I could'nt have been any happier with the show, regardless of the setlist. It was so good; I felt stupid that I had even wished for a few tunes.
The one clunker the whole night, IMO, was "Midnight Rider". It seemed like Gregg's acoustic guitar strumming was about 70% of the mix and it had a tinny quality to it. Dickey had the band running like a locomotive up to until this "Midnight Rider", which seemed a step down from the finest "CMWOL" I've ever heard. Due possibly to a combination of someone hitting Dickey with a beach ball - he seemed visibly pissed off during this song- and that tinny-ness?
Anyhow, after furiously chain smoking a butt, Dicky rebounded nicely during "Good Clean Fun" and right back to fever pitch for "Blue Sky" as well. First time ever seeing Susan Tedeschi and my goodness that lady rocks! She sat in with the Brothers for "Southbound". The whole band was grinning ear to ear while she was out there. Ive never enjoyed a "Southbound" so much and will be catching her solo, first chance I get. I brought 2 guys that had never seen a Brothers show before. I've seen probably 50 other concerts with these dudes (mostly Dead shows) and have a lot of respect for their musical tastes. Both of them were in awe. After the show, one of them kept shaking his head saying "Incredible, just incredible!" Got e-mails from both of them this morning thanking me for taking them and asking when Beacon tickets go on sale. A few people in my office went as well. One guy has seen them 6 times since '92 and said it was the best Allman's show he has ever seen - this from a guy who had lawn tix in the rain! I don't think I've ever seen a bigger crowd at Great Woods. I'd say 20,000 people showed up. This is saying something considering that they usually sell 4-5000 tix the day of the concert, the forcast called for rain, and Bruce Springsteen was starting his 5 show Boston run the next night, which might have taken ticket money out of few pockets. Awesome crowd around me -nice mix of young and old, hippies and bikers, who got along well. There were a lot of out of control folks in June (maybe the heat?), but this crowd seemed to be there for the music first and foremost. Highlights for me were "True Gravity", "Change My Way of Livin", "Blue Sky", "Southbound" and "Liz Reed", but this whole show was one long highlight. The encore. "One Way Out" was a welcome change. I'm rambling like the fool that I am, so at this point I'll spare everyone any more raving but this show was one for the books.
