Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros: Being Here Now Never Felt So Good

Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros seemingly emerged from the ether in 2009 with the infectious, psychedelic-tinged single “Home” and have remained a colorful presence on the festival circuit during the past three years. But the band’s explosive success and mystical presence are just part of frontman Alex Ebert’s unconventional story: Ebert first made waves in the late ‘90s with the high-energy, progressive rock band Ima Robot before a breakup and sobriety sparked the idea for the Edward Sharpe character and his new, hippie, shaman persona. Emily Zemler spent time with the group in the studio while they completed work on their sophomore album Here, tracing the band’s unique back-story and looking ahead to their third album, which is due in a few months.
