Jim Lauderdale is a capable songwriter; Donna the Buffalo is a capable band.
Together, they have made a perfectly agreeable album.
Not much more can be said. Despite flashes like the lively, Van
Morrison-inspired title track and the hints of hovering, grim portent in the
bluesy "Slow Motion Trouble", this album never really takes off.
It is listenable. It is non-offensive. It sounds good in the background,
but doesn't hold up under scrutiny. Still, the more I listen, the more I
think all that's alright sometimes. Like perfectly agreeable guests, they
may not be the life of the party, but you never mind having them around.
