Wild Flag are a supergroup of indie rock’s most foremost leading ladies whose trailblazing ways over the last two decades have helped inspire a generation of noisemakers from both sides of the gene pool. Comprised of former Sleater-Kinney members Carrie Brownstein on lead guitar and vocals and Janet Weiss on drums, former Helium frontwoman Mary Timony on rhythm guitar and Rebecca Cole of The Minders on keys, the hype surrounding the formation of this band of college radio ex-pats has been deafening. And with good reason. These ladies’ unique brew of post-punk fervor, Brill Building harmony and Rhiannaesque swagger provide the launching pad for heavy psych, heady prog, Nuggets-informed acid boogie and SST noise punk.

Timony and Brownstein, who both share singing duties, rekindle the creative compatibility they share from their days as The Spells, switching off between visceral and quirky until they meet at the bridge, where tracks as disparate as the Stooges-inflected “Boom” and the mind-melting CAN-like jam “Glass Tambourine” live harmoniously beneath one cumulous sound cloud. Wild Flag is indeed no joke, and will certainly make one think twice about any preconceived notions harbored in the context of women in rock, hopefully once and for all.
